What are these bugs in my bathroom sink?

Everyday I notice a couple of bugs (similar to the tiny paper bugs you get in books) in my bathroom sink. I keep the bathroom v. clean and have cleaned the sink to death but still they appear. They do look like the sort of thing you might get in make-up powder, but definitely comfined to the sink!

Any ideas?

Sounds like Silverfish

Are you in an older house by any chance?

WocketInMyPocket · 17/08/2012 23:28

Its quite modern actually, only 10 yrs old.

I think looking at the link silverfish might be too big (.5 to 1 inch). These are really tiny.

Baby ones then Grin

My dcs think its great fun to switch the light on in our bathroom at night and watch them scatter across the floor! No amount of cleaning gets rid of them Angry

With my ex-environmental health hat on, it might be an idea to trap some in a jar and drop them into your local council pest control officer just incase they are a nasty - I used to share a desk with ours and it was fascinating to see the samples he aquired over the week Smile

they might be something flying in through the window.

You can use "Ant and crawling insect spray" under the bath, behind the sink, and in cracks around pipes, it dries to a film that gets on their feet when they walk on it. damp-mop all dust away first, and re-apply every time after tiy wet-sponge or damp-mop.

Silverfish sound very romantic
"The reproduction of silverfish is preceded by a ritual involving three phases, which may last over half an hour. In the first phase, the male and female stand face to face, their trembling antennae touching, then repeatedly back off and return to this position. In the second phase the male runs away and the female chases him. In the third phase the male and female stand side by side and head-to-tail, with the male vibrating his tail against the female.[10] Finally the male lays a spermatophore, a sperm capsule covered in gossamer, which the female takes into her body via her ovipositor to fertilise the eggs."

Thanks all for your suggestions folks - I like the idea of taking a jar of them to my local pest control officer Whojam - didn't know such a person existed! i will try the insect spray too Piglet, hadn't thought of that.

Have freaked myself out looking at Wikipedia at the blown up images! Difficult to tell exactly what they are though.

head lice?

wellwisher · 19/08/2012 00:12

They may be attracted to standing water in the u bend pipe. Try keeping the plug in.

hellymelly · 19/08/2012 00:22

Storm bugs? They are attracted to damp places. Totally harmless teeny things, why bother spraying poison around?

MonaLotte · 19/08/2012 00:34

Thunder mites?

dikkertjedap · 19/08/2012 09:32

Once a week a squirt of bleach in all sinks, including shower, bath, toilet.

NeedToSleepZZZ · 19/08/2012 20:46

Let the spiders get them, nature at work! Grin

hellymelly · 19/08/2012 21:15

I think I meant thunder mites when I said storm bugs, Thankyou Mona!
