Dishwasher loading etiquette

So, it seems I am unable to load a dishwasher "properly". The stuff in there is sometimes cleaned, sometimes not.

This appears to be of great vexation to my dh.

Is there something I am missing? I really do wish I cared more but I guess I should find out in order to avoid "giving him more work."

Are there any particular items that don't get clean properly?
Are you overloading it?
If it's everything, it might be the dishwasher and not you. The spray arms might be blocked and so they won't be spinning properly for example.
Or is your dh just being an awkward twat

TellyBug · 15/08/2012 23:36

Let him do it. Every time. Problem solved.

I am apparently a v bad washer upper.

SomePeopleSayImBonkers · 16/08/2012 02:01

Could be a number of reasons for this.

*As already said, overloading? Check for any blockages
*Check filter last time I checked mine it was minging!! Rinse under tap to clean, scrub with old toothbrush
*Check that salt and rinse aid is topped up, even if using all-in-one tabs
*Look at the type of wash you are using. Mine has 4 options: rinse (rarely used), 35 degree (good for a quick blast, but not enough oomph for my normal load), 50 degree (one I normally use) and 65 degree (for a particularly dirty load!).
*Make sure that everything is placed with space to clean. E.g. some plates end up resting directly on another, so wouldn't be given the chance to get clean inbetween
*Bigger items at the bottom (dinner plates, saucepans, etc). More delicate items at the top (glassware, plastics, bowls and smaller plates)
*Make sure that items placed in aren't hugely dirty to begin with. Quick rinse under a tap or scrape into a bin.

I agree with Tellybug, if you are not capable of doing the job to his high standards then stop wasting energy and let him get on with doing a fantastic job of it. That's what I do whenever my OH tries to roll out that old chestnut.

If, otoh, you are unhappy with the way you do it then check the filter, make sure there is enough salt, and play around with stacking the contents until you find a way that suits you

PigletJohn · 16/08/2012 17:22

If this is true

The stuff in there is sometimes cleaned, sometimes not.

Then yes, something is wrong, and it is unreasonable to criticise someone who notices it, even if they express concern. I am assuming no-one has battered you round the kitchen with a rolling pin.

You can give the upper arms a spin after loading to make sure they are not obstructed by anything, and you can make sure the slots in the arms are not obstructed by lumps of food, and of course you can make sure all the filters are clean - there may be three. The instruction book will say how.

Yep, I seem unable to load the dishwasher properly according to my DH, so therefore the job lands to him, win win situation really. Luckily I cant seem to get the jist of unloading aswell so I leave that to the professional aswell Grin I definately do not load wrongly on purpose, oh no siree

Ponders · 16/08/2012 17:32

spray arm/s being stopped by something in the way is what leaves mine dirty sometimes

forks & narrow pointy knives can stick out of bottom of cutlery holder & stop that arm going round - I now put forks tines up (I know a lot of people do that anyway) & my Bosch d/w cutlery holder has 2 sections with the bottom raised up, so even if things do stick out they don't go down far enough to cause problems

all sorts of things can stop top arm going round so I always give it a quick swivel before I turn it on

Camelsshouldnteatcrisps · 17/08/2012 07:46

The only way to test if the problem is due to your loading, or to the dishwasher itself is to conduct a thorough investigation. I suggest that your DH load the dishwasher at every use for at least 1 week. Then you will know.

Babyrabbits · 17/08/2012 08:37

Christ i get this my dh, he spend about ten times longer than me loading it!

I whizz through the day chucking it in. Should rinse plates more and not let things go hard...if only i have more time.

Tell him to pee off :-) or do it himself.

WinkyWinkola · 17/08/2012 10:19

The dishwasher is fine. I clean it every month and arms all work ok. The soap dispenser doesn't open sometimes so I just put a tablet in cutlery tray.

Dh is just being an arse because it was 10.30pm, I wasn't interested in "learning" how to stack it properly at that time and was demonstrating that I wanted to create more work for him. Weirdo.

I never even asked him to do the dishwasher. I don't expect him to do anything during the week.

Silly old trout.

Thanks for all the tips though. Will investigate again.
