And re-assure me it will work and I won't end up with streaky glasses.

Also, can I use cheapy vinegar or will it have to be white vinegar?

rinse aid is very cheap, why would you want to use a substitute?

I use white vinegar. It doesn't leave streaks. Rinse aid never worked, maybe because of hard water. I've never used any vinegar except distilled white, which I gather (from all the websites I scoured looking for a solution to the residue on everything in the dishwasher problem) was the preferred kind.

Thank you.

Math, it sounds like you are describing limescale deposits from hard water. If you are in the UK this should be prevented by the miniature water softener in the dishwasher. Possibly yours is faulty, or needs adjusting, or the resin regenerator has not been kept topped up with salt (the machine does not add salt to the washing or rinsing water).

Thanks for the tips PigletJohn -- I am renting so it is very possible the dishwasher is a bit run down. It is a pretty old model. I will take a look at it and tweak as necessary.
