How to declutter and make money???

We are moving house in the near future (not sure when as Im waiting to hear back from the council as to when and where)
Chances are the new place is going to be smaller than where we are currently living and this place is bursting at the seams with crap!!!!
I really need to chuck a lot of stuff out but could also do with making some money in the process to help with moving costs.

Just wondered if anyone had any tips. I have cleared a cupboard in my bedroom but now the floor in there looks like something from one of those hoarding programmes!!!
The move is hopefully going to be a fresh start for us so it would be nice to make that transition without all the crap that is currently taking over our flat.

thanks.

Car boot sale or eBay?

spingey · 12/08/2012 15:41

I have never used ebay before and am not very familiar with it....have no laptop atm either. Im using my mums at the moment whilst she is away for a few days. I guess maybe I could ask to borrow it for a little longer.
She has told me to send it all to the charity shop but I really need the money so I think Im going to have to try and sell it one way or another. A car boot could work though, I hadnt actually thought of that.

I have put a few things back in the cupboard that we are going to take with us....the idea is that I can start packing things and put them away.

Im so nervous about the whole move. When I moved in here we barely had anything so it was pretty easy. over 4 1/2 years we have accumulated so much stuff and have double the amount of furniture that we moved in with!!!!

I had that problem, it was a nightmare when I moved. Sort them into piles:

Things you want to take
things you want to bin/recycle
things you can sell. Anything which is unsold can be taken to the charity shop if you wish.

You can sell large items (shelves/beds etc) in the local newspaper. Smile

Yep do a car boot, you will be surprised what people buy.

You won't make loads of money but you will sell stuff.

I have recently cleared my entire house and used the following ways of getting rid of stuff: ebay, gumtree and car boot sales.
Ebay is fine for selling things like unwanted perfume (i have sold a quarter full bottle of Jean Paul Gaultier for 5 pounds) and selected items of clothing that is in good condition (sold like new leather jacket on there too). I find for the larger items it was a bit of a pain. One of my buyers took ages to collect some chairs. I have had more success selling bigger items on gumtree by specifying the area to collect and then it is up to them to do so.
At car boot sales you can get rid of a lot of stuff but for discount prices. I even had a man not buy a toaster for 1 pound thinking that it was broken (it wasn't) and that I would be swindling him (I wasn't). You really do get chancers that will always bargain you down from the price you say. So say a higher price and then say - "for you, I'll let you have it for..." I've only ever made about 40 pounds from a car boot sale (not a lot considering the amount of stuff I got rid of) but every bit of cash helps! The good thing is not having to find a place for all the stuff lying around all the time.
I have also been quite thorough about passing on stuff I have used for my baby and no longer need to friends and friends of friends. And finally, if I just want stuff recycled, I just place on gumtree's free stuff. (things people have collected on this include: bag of plastic hangers, very old vacuum cleaner, used Ikea shelves)

Thanks for all the replies :)
We have a local paper/website that Im going advertise a few of the nicer kids toys on and the rest I will car boot.
I remember the last carboot didnt make much but how much do you tend to charge for things?
There is just so much of it!!! Im trying to just sort the "bin it" stuff at the moment. A friend of mine is going to come and help me too which will be great, she is the polar opposite of me and doesnt keep anything she doesnt need. She also told me of a local shop that sells kids stuff for you and takes some of the profit, she said if I have anything nice like m&s etc to take it there as I will get much more than selling it at a car boot.
Its just rather overwhealming right now. I dont think Im going to be able to sleep in my bed tonight!
