Preparation for potty training- in terms of cleaning materials!

Thinking about starting potty training DD in the next couple of weeks- not 100% sure if she is ready but we'll give it a crack & see how we go. In any event there are bound to be accidents so what do I need to have on hand to clear up my mainly carpeted house? Grateful for any tips!

hi lizaard quenie, may i congratulate you on thinking about this before time? i didn't, and learned the hard way that you need DETTOL. or cheap version thereof. get some absorbent cloths in, and if an accident happens, mop up the excess, and then dilute a small amout of dettol in a bucket and use that to clean up more thoroughly. This will avoid horrid smells. good luck.

GwennieF · 10/08/2012 20:39

I would second the Dettol!

shattereddreams · 10/08/2012 20:40

Stay in garden as much as poss!
I just use towels and stand on the wet patch.

If she isn't willing to sit on potty (choc buttons and sticker book ready) then you will find it hard. Getting them to sit on it and stay on it is the trick!

Good luck
DS is one month in and we have some accidents mainly my fault for leaving him too long.
But he takes himself to potty and is even trying to wee standing up !

Thanks you all very much- off to buy dettol & absorbent pads- do you mean like the pampers changing mat ones?

Ah- I would love to take the credit for being such a clever clogs & so well prepared but it was the fact that whilst in her cot in only her nappy today whilst I was putting the washing machine on- dd managed to poo in her nappy, take it off & somehow put it on the floor outside of the cot practically folded up. Not a spec of poo anywhere except for in the nappy. Nothing leaked- or rolled- I was extremely grateful. Told
My mum & she said its time to potty train dd!

Dettol aerosol
Latex gloves
Nappy bags & vvv cheap sanny pads make a great, cheap alternative potty liner
Cheap pants and a pair of scissors when you can't face pulling shitty pants down

MousyMouse · 10/08/2012 21:35

if you are lucky you might not need anything.
dc 2 just decided (whilst we were moving house) that nappies are for babies and is dry (daytime) without accident since.

but I agree with others, plenty of towels, dettol spray, box of chocolate buttons, books (for long sittings)...

lizardqueenie · 10/08/2012 21:37

Thank you thank you. Must add choc buttons for me!

wow sounds like your child knows what she wants! i didn't mean pamper mats, i meant those microfibre absorbent cloths, but any absorbent floor cloths will do. good luck!!!

Carpet cleaner, absorbent towels, wipes for cleaning the potty, chocolate buttons gold stars and one potty have done it for us

And bio tex for washing the poo accident pants though my dd's poo has hardened up while we have been doing potty training and so it doesn't stick now....

Many changes of clothes in key places, we didn't worry about a travel potty, just took the home one with us a few times until DD got the idea that we would find a big loo wherever we went

Loo seat because we wanted her to be as happy with the loo as the potty, when we are out she does without it, I lift her on and she perches quite happily

How did I do that?!

shattereddreams · 12/08/2012 20:57

Oh flush able loo roll is a must.
Getting poo in potty is great and if you hve wet Andrex to hand, you can drop them on top and still tip lot down loo.
Otherwise you have to seperate out baby wipes.

shattereddreams · 12/08/2012 20:57

I meant flush able wet wipes! Moist toilet tissue.

Babyrabbits · 13/08/2012 08:31

I would recomend zoflora to disinfect, make up diluted sprays.

The best thing was the mothercare reusable toilet pants for going out and About. ( they help you to relax a bit)

Second treats, they worked for both of mine.

Towels and potty in the car, towel on the car seat.

I found it quite painless, both dry well before two. I think you have to be very chilled about potty training. Good luck.
