Have come home from a week away to discover a horde of fleas have invaded. What's the best way of tackling them.

I have just coated the cat in advantage and put some powder down, but the powder seeks to have had no effect. What now?

Indorex (I think that's the name) spray. You can buy it from the vet. It's very effective and also kills spiders when they walk on the carpet. Also religiously Frontline or Stronghold your cat every 4 weeks.

and lots of hoovering. Wash the cats bedding and tumble-dry to kill the eggs.

be careful to use the Cat chemicals, not the drops for dogs.

hoovering hoovering hoovering.

I find Advantage and Frontline are total crap. Get some stronghold. You'll need a prescription.

I second/third/fourth the hoovering. Having just got over a flea invasion myself, I found the best way was to buy a new hoover (desperately overdue) with the max air watts for your bucks. I also used a spray from just for pets, but not overly convinced that it was effective on the fleas. However, it did kill deader than a dead thing every fly, moth, spider and mosquito within a radius of about 10km this is only a minor exaggeration

As you're mopping up the dregs, walk around slowly, barefoot, and 'collect' the immature fleas that have hatched that day. Pinch them off and drown the buggers under fast running water. Very satisfying!

The cats have been frontlined as I can't get time off work to get to the vets to get advantage, but they still have the odd flea on them. The house, I'm proud to say, has none Grin

A flea collar actually in the hoover bag stops them from hopping back out. I was a bit sceptical but it did seem to have an effect when we were afflicted in the spring.

I second Indorex. We had a nasty bout of fleas that we couldn't get rid of last week. I ordered Indorex from an online company for a cheaper price than amazon. It arrived next day. I cleared the home of anything vulnerable (kids/fish/hamster) and sprayed. The fleas died quickly. After a day or two of waiting for the odd last larvae to become a flea and the spray to work on them.....no more fleas.
