There's a ring (but not of confidence!) surrounding the plughole of the basin. It's no the beigey coloured sort but rather a grey colour. Is it limescale and what's the best way to get rid of it please, preferably not using products but what I have in the cupboards? TIA.

Yes it sounds like it. You can use vinegar/lemon juice, put the plug in, fill with vinegar/lemon until the ring is covered, leave over night in the morning it should have dissolved and you can rub it off.

Try putting the plug in and pouring vinegar (preferably white vinegar) in, leaving it to soak for a long time, then it may scrub off?

Long term solution - get a water softener it makes cleaning a whole lot easier!

YYY to water softener

Until then the "bathroom spray" cleaners really do work, used frequently.

If anyone uses shaving foam it seems particularly prone to leaving a film.

I also run the pointed end of a wooden cocktail stick around my plughole (where the edge of the brass/chrome ring meets the sink) as its surprising how soap and cleaning stuff can buid up in that ridge.
And yes, I do clean my sink fairly often.
