Does anyone have any great tips/cheap places to buy nice things? Our flat is pretty small and a bit austere looking (my says it looks like dh bachelor pad!). Our kitchen/living room/dining room is all one room. I'd love to put some nice things up on the walls. Id love it if anyone had some interesting maybe diy ish ideas l like bunting but a bit less carnival/students, I love 20x200.com but unfortunately I think thats US only. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Shelving, I would love shelving, you can do anything with it, use bits of scrap wood for plants/kids stuff, posh proper shelving for nice stuff, metal shelving, plastic shelving can you tell I want shelving

If your house is sunny you could build a brilliant dangly plant theme.

My walls are about 2inch of plaster so just crumbles if I try to hang anything.

Book shelves are an alternative but tend to take up space on the floor.

Fabrics around doors are good too and help make it cosy.

I saw a magazine spread recently and they had photo/ postcard bunting with the images sewn onto bias binding it looked really effective, and a bit different to the classic country/ street party bunting that has been around of late.

Maybe a random display or photos framed in a shape (heart?) with some nice things hung with them? Like wicker hearts, little plaques with sayings on, shells?

Shelving with framed photos, fab money box, ornaments, flowers on?

Candles somewhere?

Rugs and cushions always soften a room.

I know I'll probably get slated, but I think ikea has some great things. Dunelm mill is cheap ish.

Lamps always good too to make a room more homey.

Mirrors opposite windows to reflect the light and make the rooms look and feel wider.

You could do your own paintings on shop bought canvas. Buy the tester pots of paints from DIY shop and let your imagination do the rest. My SIL is an expert at these and uses lovely colours then thin lines of silver paint to make it look posh! Another friend did abstract ones using dinner plates as an outline but only on the edges iyswim. Very effective, you can pick the colours to match your room and look £££!

You could find cheap-ish cushions etc to continue the colour scheme then.

These from Wilkinsons are nice without being too pretty so DP doesn't feel he's living in a girly place!

We live in a tiny flat. I get inspiration from loving living small and tiny ass apartment I just love on the 'About' page of 'Tiny Ass Apartment' it has:-

"Wish you had a five-bedroom mansion in the hills and enough money to decorate it with stuff from Anthropologie that's NOT on sale? Face it -- you live in a tiny-ass apartment with only enough cash to buy... nothing. Here's how to still be fabulous."

Yup - that's me! Grin
