Any recommendations please for a brand that actually work properly. Have 3 bags full of duvets and air!!! Am fed up buying vacuum bags that don't work. Can't remember what brand i have that are useless.

I'm having the same problem! A friend has recommended the jml ones which you can get in Robert Dyas. Haven't actually got around to getting any myself yet so would be interested if anyone has any thoughts.

I would try a vacuum storage chest - a vac bag inside a cloth/mesh chest. It protects the plastic from puncturing and if the valve goes the bag doesn't expand too much. Plus they are easier to handle, no slippy plastic and useful handles. Bought mine abroad but Google it, there are some for sale in UK for sure.

Personally would not recommend the JML bags, plastic is thin and punctures easily and the valves leak.

I bought some from home bargains (they were the lavender scented ones) and most of them have stayed intact. Very cheap too, maybe around 70p a bag.

I've got some of these www.johnlewis.com/164775/Product.aspx from John Lewis - seem great to me. They are pricey, but cheap ones seem to split immediately.
