Second hand or new?

Fridge is full of ice and is likely to die soon even though it is only 5 years old. Freezer also full of ice, although slower to grow, but this is a more acceptable situation as it is about 20 years old.

Someone at work is advertising a fridge and a freezer for £50 the pair, both about 10 years old but working fine.

I can't really afford to replace both right now but will have to find away but if needs...

WWYD? Where are you in the Second hand or new dilemma?

I dont think ive ever had a brand new fridge or freezer, I've always had second hand and ive had a few over the years.

Brand new doesnt always last longer, my friend had an American style freezer from new and that died after three years but my freezer is ten years old second hand and is still ok.

Depends on what you can afford really, I wouldnt be bothered going second hand if I was on a low budget

It depends on the make and the seller...if has been kept clean and is a good make I'd rather have that than a cheap new one.

I bought a bosch fridge from a friend once who was selling just because she was having a new kitchen put in and was treating herself to new, those are the sort of bargains that are good.

My electricity bill almost halved after replacing old freezer, so I'd recommend new, but if fridge is right size why not buy it and sell on later when you can afford new.

Same dilemma for us earlier in the year gave a 2nd hand verdict.

It's a PITA if they pack in and you lose stuff. If you reckon what you have is on the way out and you trust this person at work,I'd jump before pushed, and replace with new or another 2nd hand if necessary as time goes by.

£50 and ten years old is no great bargain.

If you are having to collect it yourself, you can probably get something better for less or nothing.

Look in newsagents windowsn freegle and in ebay (use the "nearest first" and "price up to" filters)

Fridge was declared dead last week, my BIL came round with a probe and said fridge was 17c inside, no wonder the milk was off! I took it into my head that better quality would last longer and bought a Bosch that was about double the price of most of the other fridges there. I have taken showtimes point about old appliances, I think the freezer is probably using a lot of juice to keep going, it is really old.

So new won over second hand on grounds of:
fridge required immediately
ease of procurement and removal of old fridge
energy efficiency

I'm sure it will be much nicer than your old one

When I chucked out my very old FF, the electricity use went down 3kWh/day (100 gbp/year)

I should have bought a new one sooner
