Cleaning wheelie bins

Our wheelie bin honks. Its now only collected every two weeks and in theory shouldn't hum too much as we have a separate food waste collection, but we have nappies from both our toddler and baby in there (we do use reusables on the baby most of the time, but not the toddler). It now smells when empty and I think I can smell it when the lid is shut (might be paranoid aboutt this though).

How often do you clean your wheelie bin, and how do you do it (especially if you don't have access to a hose where your bin is kept)?

I hate wheelie bins in general - we had an issue last year where a bag split in the bin and there was food, maggots etc all inside the bin. It was horrendous!
I had the same problem - no hose pipe nearby!

Once it was emptied, I poured a kettle of boiling water in it with some bleach, and got an old soft bristled indoor broom, scrubbed all the insides, tipped the water out over a drain to empty, and repeated this process a few times.
Since then I buy the wheelie bin bag liners to try and keep the inside quite clean. only problem with these though is they tend to fall inside the bin so you need to be careful when putting other things in.

I'm still paranoid about having a smelly bin! When I pick up the dog poo from the garden, I tend to put it all in one carrier bag and dump it in the special dog waste bin in our local park as I can't stand the thought of it hanging around our wheelie bin for up to 2 weeks! Blush

Wheele bins I can cope with, we have a hose, but the food bin!

I've only had it a few weeks and it's vile!
I'm a biologist, I've grown mold and bacteria on purpose, but opening the food bin is just discusting!

there is a mobile wheelie bin cleaning service that follows the bin men on their round once a month and therefore our main household waste bin gets a wash without me having to do anything. We pay £1.50 for each wash.

There's a powder available to sprinkle in bin, but my fail-safe method is to use two (cheap) binliners, each tied separately so no air can escape, and same for anything really niffy like nappies - bag it twice, ok for 3 weeks.

We pay £1.80 every fortnight for the black wheelie to be cleaned.
We don't have a separate food waste collection, so it is essential here.

I've cleaned it myself in the past though. I squirted Stardrops all round the inside, poured a kettleful of boiling water round the sides, then used an old mop to scrub all the insides. Tipped it all down the drain, then poured a second kettleful round to rinse, tipped it down the drain, job done.
