steam mops?? do i need one?

I have a steam cleaner which is great but very large and heavy so it only comes out once in a blue moon. If i bought a steam mop would it be effective and convenient enough for me to whizz round twice a week or so and clean all my floors? a mixture of tiled, laminate and vinyl? If so which one do i buy?

I use mine every day. I never used the old mop and bucket that frequently, good gracious. But I have this one hung on the kitchen wall and just take it down and run it around like the broom.

It's a stick mop from Lakeland and I have to say it's pretty good, though the floor does dry a little streakily.

dexter73 · 19/07/2012 20:06

My steam mop arrived today. I have laminate and tiled floors throughout downstairs and I hadn't washed them for a week as I was waiting for the mop to arrive. It was brilliant. Cleaned all the dog/cat/mud grot off easily and dried almost instantly. No streaks either. Took less than 10 minutes to do all downstairs too.

Hassled · 19/07/2012 20:08

I want one. I have to have one. How did I not know about them?

dexter73 · 19/07/2012 20:10

I only knew about it after reading a thread on here. MN will bankrupt me!

frazzled74 · 20/07/2012 21:57

Doilooklikeatourist · 20/07/2012 21:59

I thought you couldn't use on laminate.

timtam23 · 20/07/2012 23:54

We have a steam mop and it works really well (on laminate, vinyl & tiles) however DH managed to make a mophead-shaped mark on the laminate a few weeks ago when he left the mop turned on & standing on the floor while he separated the fighting DSs...I guess the laminate was burned or singed as it went white & was very noticeable against dark laminate (DH managed to use woodstain to disguise it a bit but you can still see it Sad) However it does get the floors much cleaner than a normal mop (2 young DSs, 2 cats, and a grubby DH all track in a lot of dirt) & they dry quickly.

daisyrain · 20/07/2012 23:58

You do not need one.
The media says you do.
How do you think we survived years ago, without brain washing!
We wasyed & rinsed = 1p No electric.

Acumenon · 21/07/2012 08:55

What media? Us?

(I don't have a telly or read magazines so was unaware of steam mops until I saw people talking about them on mumsnet.)

And yes, you don't need one! You only need food, water and shelter.

Fun.

MsKayGee · 21/07/2012 10:06

Damn you Mumsnet people with your new fangled steam mops. I'm buying one. I'm a sucker for a Lakeland product with excellent reviews.

dexter73 · 21/07/2012 10:42

You don't need one but it certainly makes cleaning the floors much quicker and easier. You don't need a washing machine but it makes life much easier.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 21/07/2012 10:59

I agree, you don't need one but they make life easier. I have one and it cuts the time I spend mopping the floors (all laminate) substantially, it also leaves the floors much drier than a traditional mop.

dexter73 · 21/07/2012 12:06

Ok just cleaned my floors again (twice in one week - a world record for me!!) - you do actually NEED one!!!

googlenut · 21/07/2012 12:14

So which Lakeland one is it? And is the Lakeland one the best as I usually find their products massively overpriced.

dexter73 · 21/07/2012 12:56

Mine is this one. I don't know if it is the best as it is the only one I have tried.

Signet2012 · 21/07/2012 13:01

I have been thinking of getting one... I have laminate upstairs and kitchen but real wood in the hallway and lounge - can you use them on real wood?

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 21/07/2012 13:08

See, the last time there was a thread about them I rushed out and bought one, and it's crap! I probably bought the wrong one, but I was sorely disappointed and it is now at the back of the cupboard. I've gone back to old-fashioned mopping Sad Why doesn't mine work??!! (It is the Black and Decker one)

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/07/2012 17:01

Mine is the same ome as dexter73
Quick to heat up and easy to use .

bonzo77 · 21/07/2012 17:13

It's ok. this one, DH got it, I cannot believe how much it was! It does leave my tiles lovely and shiny. My gripe is that you use the washable pad then wash it. But you don't really rinse it during use, and I don't think it gets the floor as clean as a normal mop and flash. So, if the floor is really bad I use the normal mop. But you can take off the mop bit and use it for steaming other stuff.

biddyofsuburbia · 21/07/2012 17:17

Hmmm, I think I might actually need one - never knew they existed before this very moment but having just power washed our patio (which took ForEVER) i am in a cleaning frenzy...think I might be going a little bit loopy...I need to go to lakeland. Tomorrow. [crazed face emoticon]

plutocrap · 21/07/2012 21:07

What about laminate flooring, which is what we are looking at in our new house?

Can anyone comment on the relative values of the Lakeland steam mop, shark mop and the Vax one which keeps appearing on Groupon?

Many thanks!

timtam23 · 21/07/2012 23:14

we have this one

www.amazon.co.uk/Efbe-Schott-Triangular-500ml-Water-Yellow/dp/B002BYYX1U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342908486&sr=8-1

DH decided to get that particular one (he does the housework Grin) because it has a bigger water reservoir than most, so you don't have to keep refilling the water, and it is cheap but seems to clean quite well (I think it was a Which? best buy)

plutocrap we use ours mainly on laminate and it has been fine (apart from the DH-inflicted white burn mark I mentioned above - which was due to him leaving it upright & turned on in one spot for a few minutes)
