How do you deal with wee soaked matresses?

Just that really, have a 3 and a 4 1/2 year old, both of whom unfortunately have the occasional accident/soak through the nappies and I am obviously concerned about the smell. I give them a scrub with some anti bacterial spray then use fabreeze but I'm sure one of you will have some better ideas! Any tips?

You already do more than I do. Blush
I assume you have waterproof covers on them, too?

normaleggy · 07/07/2012 11:02

DD can't sleep with the waterproof covers on, she doesn't like the noise they make! Haven't tried with ds yet as he is still in nappies but woke up soaked this morning.

Look for non-pvc cover, maybe? They aren't as plasticy or hot to sleep on, although they don't last as well, either (I've just had one die!).

I have a plastic waterproof cover on DS bed, with a soft quilted matress protector over the top. This seems to stop the rustling noises.

pinkteddy · 07/07/2012 13:26

try something like this from mothercare its soft and doesn't rustle and it really works. Try mixing a solution of water and biological washing /powder to get rid of any smells.

Huggies do disposable mattress protectors. Much smaller than a washable mattress protector so unlikely to rustle annoyingly.

tribpot · 07/07/2012 13:33

These are fantastic mattress protectors, highly recommended. Not at all rustley.

Thanks for the tips and links everyone! x

I've replaced DS mattress with a plastic covered one from Mothercare. He doesn't have an accident that often, but when he does the old one got soaked through.

IawnCont · 08/07/2012 10:41

Whatever you do, don't wash the mattress in the bath. Only a bloody fool would do that Blush

lawn Grin

I use the towelling ones (for my kids!)
They don't rustle or scratch at all

They do start to leak after a bit of left on the bed too wet though

PrettyCherryTrees · 08/07/2012 10:51

My two are dry at night but I use the pampers disposable ones in case of accudents.

They tuck in well at the sides and if there's an accident you can just bin them.

Also great for between the pillow and pillowcase if they ate being sick too have finally learned after much pillow washing

bronze · 08/07/2012 10:52

Sorry I mean they leak after months of being used and washed and only then being left damp.

DilysPrice · 08/07/2012 10:57

Hippychick ones aren't plasticky at all - they just feel like a thick flannelette sheet but don't allow any wee though at all. £££ but worth every penny IMO.

Use enzyme cleaner to break down any uric acid left on, and then use a mattress protector.

You can buy enzyme cleaner from the pet shop.

SecretPlansAndCleverTricks · 10/07/2012 12:44

New mattress once the worst is over.

papooshka · 10/07/2012 12:50

If you can see the stains, wet them and then make a paste with some water and bicarbonate of soda, put the paste over the wetted stains and leave for a day...once its dry, hoover off the bicarb of soda, this takes all the smell away and really works for me.

Then you must get a mattress protector!!

Ikea also sell rectangular mats which are soft on one side and plastic on the other, I use 2 of them to cover the main area where the kids sleep and they work fine, you must have a fitted sheet though to keep them in place.
