How to get the pee smell out of a car seat

DS is potty training, but can't quite control himself in the car yet, so I'm having to clean it every other day. Today, the smell just won't go.

I've taken the cover off and washed it (smells fine, not put it back on yet) disinfected the actual chair (plastic and styrofoam bits) but it still reeks of piss. Any ideas how to get the smell out? TIA

Sterilising solution in a slight dilute spray then leave out to air/ dry overnight. It can fade the fabric though.

Are you able to separate the polystyrene from the seat and wash it separately? I used to do that with our Britax seats. I would soak the polystyrene in hot water with bicarbinate of soda added, and wash the seat all over with the same soution.
Dry it all in the sun if you can (!).

And when you put the seat back, make sure you put an absorbant mat (changing mat is an ideal size) under the seat, so the wee doesn't soak through into the actual seat of the car (oh yes, that happens! ).

I also used to wrap an absorbant mat in a small towel and put that in the car seat under the boys. I don't think that's recommended safety-wise, but it saves a lot of hassle to simply wash the towel on a daily basis.

Oh, and make sure you do all the straps as well. There should be a section in the instruction book that tells you how to undo all the straps and take them off.

Those aslo got soaked in a bucket of bicarb/water. I then scrubbed them with a scrubbing brush and dettox spray (antibac).

Thanks. The fabric is fine, that went in the wash. It's the plastic, styrofoam and straps that are still stinky. I've got some Milton tabs somewhere, I'll give that a go.

Bio washing powder work? It got rid of the cat pee smell when our cat kept pussing in the wardrobe.

It might if you soak overnight.

Eventually, nothing gets rid of cat's pee. It's horrible! Little boy's pee isn't quite so vile !

I wiped it down last night with bio and I can't smell it this morning.
I soaked the styrofoam bits in bicarb and water overnight and they are fine too :)

Any tips for avoidance? I was tempted to buy puppy pads yesterday, to protect the chair.

Unfortunately, the only way to avoid little boys weeing is to not give them anything to drink, which is a bit extreme!

I should say, when I said to use a changing mat as an absorbant mat, I meant the disposable one sold by Pampers etc, not the big things you get on a changing table! Puppy training mats will do the job just fine, and probably be much cheaper!

I used to pull it up between his legs and secure it with the buckle of the harness.

One more thing to remember...this phase really doesn't last long. Bythhe end of the summer holidays, it will be a distant memory and replaced by something worse

Try white vinegar, put it in a spray bottle and spray it lightly over the seat.

Buy a product designed for animal house-training accidents. You need an enzyme-based product that will remove the odours. Good luck.
