Which washing powder smells less strong - Ariel or Persil?

I haven't used branded washing powder in over 20 years, but there is an offer on at costco for a huge box of washing powder. I don't like strong smelling products. I used to love the smell of Ariel when I used it but I expect things have changed since, and I've noticed lots of people seem to smell strongly of washing powder now.

Which one is less likely to knock me sideways with the pong?

Persil less perfumed imho.
But could also be a bio/non bio thing?

(usual HQ disclaimers apply)

Thanks (when I saw who had replied I thought you come to rap my knuckles and I wondered what could possibly be offensive about my message Grin)

if you get a big box, after a few days you will no longer notice the scent. You will only notice one that is different.

I did think that until recently PJ, but someone gave me some clothes for the DCs in December and I still find the smell of whatever they were washed in previously overpowering after numerous washes in the detergent I use. Maybe I am unusually sensitive, or maybe the previous owner of the clothes used a whole box with every wash.

I use both, Ariel Bio Actilift for whites, and Persil Colour for everything else (I buy it from Costco too and lasts ages) and the Ariel is definitely stronger smelling and seems to linger. once the box finishes I may switch to the Persil Bio, but Ariel is fab on DS's greying White polo shirts Grin

Incidentally I work for a clothes store chain and I can always tell when people have worn, washed and try to return things for refund Angry New clothes don't smell like that!

Non bio hardly smells at all - person, fairy or sainsburys own brand all very unnoticeable. (although fairy is strongest)

I use my emergency bio stash of Ariel on some sicky sheets that hadn't washe clean. I washed them over 24h ago and the house still reeks of it. Hmm it does cover the smell of puke nicely tho. :)

Gosh, I bought some Fairy non-bio before my first DC was born and couldn't believe how strongly it smelt. Starting to wonder if bulk buying something I haven't smelt is such a good idea. Having said that, buying a smaller box wouldn't be that much cheaper so maybe I should just try it.

oh i love the Ariel with feebreeze, dont see it as much

ive noticed to how strong people smell of washing powder,or maybe its the softner some of those are VERY strong scented

Anypointinseeingdoc · 04/07/2012 16:52

I got the giant Persil today. I did one wash with one dessertspoonful in the drawer and the clothes came out smelling pleasant but not overpowering. I don't think I could use the recommended quantity. I also think powders smell stronger than liquid, and I usually use liquid.

Using one spoonful at a time I expect the box to last some time so I shouldn't need to post about this again!

If you bulk buy and don't like the smell you'll be stuck with tons of it though Hmm . Glad the persil worked out for you. I use ecover liquid or halo liquid washing powder. I agree some washing smells soooooo strong - my PIL use some kind of bold 2 in 1 and the smell reminds me of wee and both they and their house reek of it - even when she gives me a magazine or something that comes from their house I can smell it at ten paces as it smells of their wee powder Shock

Anypointinseeingdoc · 04/07/2012 18:24

That's it exactly, the smell of wee! The smell I am getting from people is the smell of nappies that need to be stripped when they have been washed with too much detergent! I was in a house the other day and there was that wee/washing powder smell and they don't even have any children.

I use Ecover because I can't abide smelly/scented washing powders, it has barely any scent at all. It is especially good when things are dried outside, they come in smelling like fresh air and sunshine, tis larverly!

I also find the Co-op own-brand ecological bio powder (comes in a white plastic sack with trees on the front I think) is very good and seems to have no fragrance.

Seona1973 · 19/07/2012 15:50

I use Persil bio and at the moment comfort sensitive fabric softner (like the smell and it was on offer)

thisisyesterday · 19/07/2012 15:51

I used to use Ecover as it doesn't really smell, but have recently changed to Sainsburys own bbrand non-bio which does just as good a job, and doesn't smell at all strongly

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/07/2012 00:27

I use Ecover on my guinea-pigs fleeces because it has a minimal smell and it does a pretty good job of cleaning. (Doesn't get out all the stains, but not a problem on their fleeces)
