It depends on how dirty your house is as to how often you need to do things. We have 2 bathrooms and only 2 adults and 1 child so they don't get very dirty, one bathroom and a family of 5 would need to be done more often.

Our floors get dirty with having the dogs and DP, so I have to sweep several times a day and mop every day. If I didn't have the dogs I wouldn't do it anywhere near as often.

Some things are fairly standard though. IMO bedding should be changed weekly, toilets a minimum of weekly but really more than that.

If like me you have dog hair and a toddler dropping crumbs then you do need to run the hoover around every day, but if not then you don't!

Thistledew · 02/07/2012 23:47

When it needs doing.

Haylebop12 · 02/07/2012 23:48

Agreed with above but probably clean bath 3 times a week as we are bath people not shower people :-)

EvilRotation · 02/07/2012 23:54

DISCLAIMER I am a bit lot of a slattern, and only found this thread and section because it was on active threads, and thought I'd give a slattern's perspective to make you all feel better!

Change DC's bedding Once a week, but twice for DS1 as he is sweaty and it stinks otherwise.
Change my own bedding Once a week
Wash towels After every use
Clean toilet Twice daily, upstairs and down, with domestos, once a week the outside/cistern/seat/etc.
Clean bath/shower twice a week
Clean/mop bathroom floor Upstairs once a month, downstairs once a fortnight
Clean/mop kitchen floor sweep floor twice daily, mop once a week
Dust twice a year, dust is a protective covering for furniture...
Clean kitchen cupboards outside wipe spills as the happen, inside once or twice a year
Clean the tops of kitchen cupboards so far, once in 8 years
Tops of wardrobes 3 times in 8 years
Doors to rooms about every 3 months
Banisters twice a year
Under furniture depends on room - front room once a week, kitchen never, my bedroom every 3 months, kids rooms every 6 weeks
Windows inside start of summer each year, so annually
Windows outside start of summer downstairs, never upstairs

Hope that makes you feel better. Grin

The cleaning toilets one - I HAVE to, think my DS's wee is pure limescale!

mumat39 · 03/07/2012 00:14

I think I must be the most lazy person ever on mumsnet. I do what I have to do when I have to do it. I grew up with my gran who was forever cleaning cupboards and moving things from one place to another. It used to drive my mum mad. Having seen that and the fact that my gran would get annoyed at me for not feeling the need to do the same I sort of subconciously decided I was never going to lool for work if I didn't have to.

BUT, having read your responses, I'm thinking maybe at 43 I should get over this and so some more stuff around the house. Some things get done every couple of weeks, like making sure DC's beds are changed, and everyday ones like making sure that the loo is clean, but it's all those other jobs that I'm going to have to start doing. I try and live in a clean and tidy way to minimise extra work so do things like take shoes off at front door to not bring bits in.

On average how long per week would you say you spend on these sorts of bloody chores?

Couthy, I think I've just out-slatterned you.:(

Vacuum? kids do it living room twice a week, middle room once every few weeks, stairs, landing hall, bedrooms weekly.
Clean kitchen cupboards?
Clean tops of kitchen cupboards? No tops - have had the cupboards fitted to the ceiling to prevent having to clean the tops
Clean tops of wardrobes? As abover

blimey I seem to do a lot but my house is always a mess!!

AdoraBell · 03/07/2012 00:31

"How often is enough" depends on you.

I tend to do o following

DC's beds, well 1 still wets, so that's almost daily plus weekly for the other.
My bed, was weekly but I'm dealing with two puppies so it's kinda fortnightly/three weeks currently
Towels, every day as puppies sleep on them, towels for human use, twice a week
Bathrooms, daily Swish and Swipe (Flylady stylee) and weekly full clean
Kitchen floor, for three weeks leading up to last Saturday, anything up to 20 times a day, puppies were stuck in the kitchen, normally daily plus dealing with spills
Bathroom floor, see Bathrooms above
Dust, every coupele of days, it's really bad here
Vacuum, daily- bleedin' dog hairs
Kitchen cupboards, outside weekly plus any spills. Inside, never do- ishoos Angry
Top of kitchen canbinets, can't reach and besides, we've only been here 4 yearsWink
Wardrobes are built in
Doors to rooms, dust a few times a week
Banisters, couple of times a week
Furniture, wood gets dusted & cleaned a couple of times a week. I don't do the sofas because I didn't want white leather. Dusting underneath, I flick a duster under the lounge & dinning room furniture a couple of times a week
Windows, OH does them
Mirrors, a couple of times a week.

Now, back to the question of "enough" what I do is not enough in the eyes of my OH because he's a clean freak. I think I do quite enough considering the house is huge, actually.

TraceyWasALoner · 03/07/2012 01:14

Change DC's bedding ? Weekly (always Sunday)
Change your own bedding? On Sunday (but change pillowcases daily)
Wash towels? Twice a week.
Clean the toilet? Every day. We have four bathrooms but two little boys who pee all over the walls, baseboards, floor and bathmat in all bathrooms several times a day. .
Clean the bath/shower? Shower gets cleaned twice a month, kids bath gets done as needed...usually at least once a week depending on use. I never clean our master bath as I almost always shower instead. Must change this.
Clean/mop the bathroom floor? Never When I notice grimy footprints on the tiles.

Clean/mop the kitchen floor? Every bleeding day (2 dogs, three urchins)
Dust? Once or twice a week...usually the latter if we've had the windows open.
Vacuum? Every single day downstairs, once a week upstairs.
Clean kitchen cupboards? As needed...once a week?
Clean tops of kitchen cupboards? Never
Clean tops of wardrobes? We've got closets...I just shut the doors.
Clean doors to rooms? Never
Clean Balustrades/banisters? Every two weeks if they are dusty.
Clean under furniture? Every day when I vacuum downstairs (never upstairs).
Clean windows inside? Back door is glass and main garden entrance for dogs and children gets cleaned every day, as do sidelights near front door. Rest of house as needed.
Clean windows outside? Window cleaner every couple of months.

NoComet · 03/07/2012 02:02

Change DC's bedding - when they moan its dirty
Change your own bedding - when I moan its dirty (DH keeps quiet because he changes beds)
Wash towels - when they are dirty ie every 5 minutes because DD1 leaves them in soggy heaps.
Clean the toilet - when it needs it
Clean the bath/showerBlush, this needs a serious scrub.
Clean/mop the bathroom floor - its tiny it gets vaguly cleaned by DD1s towel habit.
Clean/mop the kitchen floor as little as possible it instantly gets dirty again
Dust?
Vacuum when we're having visitors
Clean kitchen cupboards?
Clean tops of kitchen cupboards - never
Clean tops of wardrobes - most are built in, ours has a tiny gap you can vaguely get a cobweb duster in, so when the spiders look too at home.
Clean doors to rooms - when I see too many dirty marks
Clean Balustrades/banisters - these are self cleaning, people use them.
Clean under furniture - three or four times a year for sofa, under the cushions far more often.
Clean windows inside- I'm not sure I ever have
Clean windows outside - DH bought the kit to do this, I'm still waiting

NoComet · 03/07/2012 02:07

Dust - every week or two vaguely. Properly if my dust allergic pest of a DSIS is coming to visit.

In truth, I have to invite her and my parents ever few months because I have to clean and hover and tidy if they are coming.

House work is not my thing and DH is even worse.

oreocrumbs · 03/07/2012 09:32

Couthy that is far from slatternly behaviour!

If limescale is a problem in your toilets you need to switch from domestos to harpic - the black one (heavy duty). That will remove the limescale, bleach just bleaches it white so you can't see it!

mumat I don't spend long, because I really don't have much time I spend my free time here. My mop and brush live out in the kitchen and are given a quick run around while I'm making tea or watching DD play out.

The same with the hoover, that lives behind the sitting room door and when a moment arises I give that a quick run around, it only takes a minute because it gets done every day.

I put one load of washing on every night and hang it up/out/TD in the morning while DD has breakfast.

I clean one type of room a day pretty much when DD goers to bed, tonight will be the 2 bathrooms, tomorrow I will do the bedrooms. By clean I mean dust, hoover and change beds. Bathrooms get mopped, bath, sink, toilet cleaned, change bath mats and wipe over shelves and tiles around sink and at splash level around bath. Will take 40 to do 2 bathrooms really well, 20 mins to give them a lick and a promise.

I don't have time to allocate a 2/3 hour block of time to cleaning anymore which I used to love Blush, between work and my DD and all the bloody animals that need my attention I just can't, so I just do what I can where I can.

My whole house is never 100% clean and tidy (its never tidy), but I keep on top of the dirt and it looks ok, if you squint.
