Induction - hobs, not babies

Hi

We are contemplating getting an induction hob for our new kitchen. Does anyone have one and love it, or hate it?

The marketing blurb about responsiveness is impressive, and the other safety features are nice. We need to get new pans anyway, so that's neither here nor there. We do a lot of hob cooking, so good responsiveness is a must.

Such a shame we can't go and do a testing before committing to such a big purchase.

They are brilliant. Firstly, there is the safety issue. The pans don't get hot, only the content of the pan, so you can touch the pan and won't burn yourself.

Secondly, once you have got used to them, they are brilliant for cooking. Much quicker even then a gas hob and you can regulate temperature well. But because they respond so quickly, you do need to get used to it.

Thirdly, they are much more economical, use far less fuel.

I would highly recommend them, ideally one of the bigger ones with five 'rings', so you got space for a big pan/casserole/wok.

Love ours, it's fab.

It's so easy to keep clean too as food doesn't burn onto it like a normal hob. It's so responsive. I can't fault it. We've got a 4 ring Neff.

I like ours. It does take a bit of getting used to - we had a few boiling over moments because it's quiet (no hissing as the water hits the hot metal)

I like that it's programmable - I can leave the tatties boiling and know it will turn itself off when they are done; it's very responsive; and ours is flush with the work surface so piss easy to clean - just a wipe over.

They are extremely economical, mine uses a third less energy than my old one. You have to shell out for new pans but it's worth it in the end. The guy in the shop where I got mine from said in 5 or 10 yrs all cookers will be induction, there won't be any others.
It's so safe with kids around. I don't worry if my 5 yr old touches mine, or the pan, he won't get burnt.
Get one, you won't regret it.

We have a range cooker with an induction hob and love it. My mum has an integrated induction hob and I hate it. The difference is mum's has touch controls and our has turny knobs. The touch controls are terrible, not responsive and takes about a dozen presses to turn it up or down to the right temp. Maybe just a problem with mum's model, but I suggest you try a 'live' version of your model to see if you get on with the controls. But for induction in principle, you can't beat it for home cooking. Really responsive and just wipes clean.

Thank you all so much.

Childoftheseventies (me too, just!) We are looking at range cookers with an induction hob. I will look extra hard at ones with turny knobs. Which range do you have?

Rangemaster professional plus 90cm. It is brilliant. The skinny oven does almost everything and heats so quickly and the pull out grill is fab. The only negative is the tiny turny knobs, for the timer, are really poor quality, but the company sent replacements which I am hoarding. Looked at falcon and Britannia but saw financial sense!

Childoftheseventies · 01/07/2012 18:39

Anotherbthought - Some aga / Rangemaster shops have working display models. You could try phoning them.

Lemonsole · 01/07/2012 19:44

Love ours - and I was a dyed-in-the-wool fan of gas before I saw one in action.

tablefor4 · 02/07/2012 21:34

Thanks so much for all your feedback. We are really thinking about it. The final selling point would be if we could see a demo, but don;t know how to go about that.

Rangemaster Professional plus 90 was exactly the model we were favouring!

I may even have converted my mother who was looking at the brochures today.

We have a Miele one which is fab.
Perfect poached eggs especiallyGrin
Ditto the boiling over as so so quiet.
Miele have centres where you can get a demo. We went to Abingdon. Have a look online for one close to you. You do need to pre book.

I love mine. LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

I used to hate cooking on our old gas hob as i'm a bit forgetful and things were always boiling over. I also hated fryingt hings as fat would spit everywhere and the hob was a pain to clean.

I still boil things over, but it's a doddle to clean. Fat spits too are super easy to wipe off. Every few days I clean mine with my washing up sponge, which is really just wiping the surface, then with a j-cloth and then a quick wipe with a paper towel. Come up lovely.

Ours has got a few scratches but I used it everyday, 2 -3 times a day and it still looks good. I'm a bit clumsy so have managed to scratch the surface but they're only superficial and it still looks great!

We have a touch control one too. People always think they have to push on the buttons but a light touch and it works a dream.

The pans are more expensive, but I got mos of mine from Ikea so not too bad.

mumat39 · 02/07/2012 23:27

The only thing I worry about is what I would do if we had a power cut. We have only had one so far in the 5 years we've lived here, so I'm hoping it's not too much of an issue. (And I hope I haven't jinxed myself by saying that we've only had one Hmm )

Childoftheseventies · 03/07/2012 00:35

Oh go on then, tell us about the kitchen you are putting your new cooker in! Style, colour? Love a bit of kitchen chat.

Poodlehorse · 04/07/2012 15:11

We had one in our ladt house and I loved it. Just moved back to gas and as soon as wehave the money to change the kitchen it will be back to induction for me. I really miss my AEG induction hob!
