I'm fed up of rummaging around in the cupboard and things falling over and pouring out.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Different size glass storage jars, got mine in Ikea.

OliviaLMumsnet · 29/06/2012 17:42

ooh pantry porn.

BiscuitNibbler · 29/06/2012 23:01

LocknLock boxes. I love them.

Used them ever since I had flour mites and had to empty the contents of my cupboards into the bin. I now have extremely organised cupboards, which makes me very happy.

Tortington · 29/06/2012 23:02

up for pantry porn - i too rummage at will - no two curries are the same

PavlovtheCat · 29/06/2012 23:04

olivia is this because your shopping has just arrived and you now have no where to hide store it properly?

PavlovtheCat · 29/06/2012 23:06

our badly organised spice cupboard actually broke the ipad Shock. DH was looking up a recipe on it, had it under the spice cupboard fool and as he opened said cupboard some cumin fell out and cracked the corner. proper shattered. luckily it still works, just the glass broken, but DH has still not sorted out how he stores his shit.

JuicyOrange · 29/06/2012 23:07

pasta in large storage container, with flap for easy pouring. Rice in a slightly smaller one. (I think they maybe for cereals actually. I also use them for cereal for the DCs as easy to store and pour) Sugar, flour etc are in clip lock boxes like PP above. All labelled. Then I have a small basket with all herb jars in, tops labelled os you dont have to pull them out. Another basket for curry stuff, another basket for cake-y type stuff (icing colouring, those bicarb and cream or tartar, baking soda posts). Nuts and dried fruit are kept in tins (like the roses ones you get at christmas) and labelled and kept in the snack cpboard which is in reach of DCs (older ones only as youngest has nut allergy).

PavlovtheCat · 29/06/2012 23:07

oh. I see you are oliviaL. Are you different to olivia?

mummy349 · 29/06/2012 23:12

Put them in plastic containers. I read something once about cupboard bugs being able to chew there way through packaging and lay eggs in store cupboard food, freaked me right out!

Flisspaps · 29/06/2012 23:13

In their jars, in a drawer.

mummy349 · 29/06/2012 23:16

Anything in glass tho, I keep it in there

BigHairyFlowers · 29/06/2012 23:31

Cupboard bugs?? Oh what fresh hell is this?!

OliviaLMumsnet · 29/06/2012 23:42

No Pavlov, I am the same OneandonlyOliviaMumsnet
I just added an L for comic effect.
My shopping is coming tomorrow but sadly I was dealing with puerile trolls so didn't edit in as many yummy goodies as I meant to. Sad

But I am doing up my kitchen soon and have a V messy pantry currently and want to sort properly so I love a pantry porn thread.
I get all excited about clear masonry jars.

BighairyCupboard bugs are flour moths We had them in our old flat. Right PITA

mummy349 · 29/06/2012 23:47

Sorry bighairyflowers, didnt mean to freak u out!
I was about to cook lentils a while back and noticed this lil bug jumping around in it, looked kinda like a flea, so I binned it, did a google search, and cupboard bugs were discovered! Since then ive been obsessed with putting any store food into containers, I am NOT accidently eating one of those!!

BigHairyFlowers · 29/06/2012 23:51

Ahh, all the flour is in jars. Unless the flour moths have a yearning for dried soya, I think everything is going to be ok.

Unless, of course, I should be Blush that the flour jars don't actually match..? Where are we on the matchiness of our clear masonry jars?

BigHairyFlowers · 29/06/2012 23:54

Thank you Olivia and mummy349!

Selks · 29/06/2012 23:59

Four large plastic tubs with lids. One for pasta, couscous, rice, noodles etc
One for nuts and seeds and dried fruit of various types
One for pulses and bags of flour
One for packets and jars of herbs and spices

It makes finding things really easy. I only have four things to deal with to find what I want, rather than having to rummage through myriad packets and boxes. Stuff stays fresh and doesn't spill. Cupboards stay clean.

iammovingsoon · 30/06/2012 00:08

Clip lock boxes for big stuff.

This (well, three sets, and I may need a fourth!) for herbs and spices (black so no UV light degradation) : www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/html/onlineshop/rub/b00_14litreOrg.php

I decant all rice, pasta, couscous, flour into glass Kilner jars which sit on the shelf above the sink (which those who updated their spreadsheets after Chaos's survey will know is by the window Wink). Nuts stay in their packets but go together in another jar.

I have some glass jars of dried pulses, cornmeal etc in glass jars in the cupboard over the work surface.

Herbs and spices stay in their original jars and sit in the specially constructed spice rack at the back of the work surface.

I have a very small kitchen. Decanting things into jars means they can go on a shelf without looking messy, and it keeps them fresh. Jars in the cupboard makes it easier to pull things out without packets falling over etc.

pookypup · 30/06/2012 07:23

Big and regularly used stuff goes in lock and store boxes. You can get a 1.8l sized which is perfect for a whole bag of flour to slide in. Smaller bits are in cheaper stocking boxes from Lakeland which are about £8 for ten. I then label up everything with DH's label maker . This makes me very happy :)

pookypup · 30/06/2012 07:24

*stacking not stocking

OliviaLMumsnet · 30/06/2012 09:55

I like matchiness but i like mixedness too
love this

feelinghappynow · 30/06/2012 10:53

This thread has made me look at my larder.......teeny weeny hardly able to see flies in the flour and icing sugar - the shame! I feel sick. Pasta, rice etc is already in glass jars, along with tea, coffee and sugar. Lack of baking but lots of ingredients just in packets has caught me out.

Todays task to buy lots of storage containers and restock...

BiscuitNibbler · 30/06/2012 13:17

Make sure you clean out the cupboards thoroughly, feeling. When I had them they were all in the cracks in the corners and between the shelves. I had to leave the cupboards empty for a couple of weeks until I had got rid of them.

Just be grateful you didn't find them after you had already used a spoonful of the flour to thicken a casserole like I did. Oddly enough I wasn't hungry that night, so DH had double helpings. Blush
