So tell me the best way to clean my litchen floor after my baby and toddler have chucked food all over it...

Now, I'm about the opposite of being a domestic goddess, and am one of those unfortunate people who just seems to push dirt around instead of actually getting rid of it!

I'm doing BLW with DS2, and DS1 seems to have regressed somewhat in his table manners, so my kitchen floor is covered in food at the end of mealtimes .

My requirements are;

  • it needs to be quick and easy (esp as I do it three times a day)
  • I want to floor to by hygienic enough for my baby to be able to crawl around on afterwards.

At the moment I scoop up the detritus with kitchen roll, then liberally apply Milton and wash it with a sponge. I've got a Dustbuster but don't like the idea of it hoovering up food which then festers inside it (even if I empty it straight after). I also don't use a dustpan and brush for the same reason - I worry that the brush will end up covered in stale food.

Now I'm sure I'm being completely ridiculous about this. So can someone just spell it out in simple words of one syllable how to do it?!

Cover the floor with newspaper.

It's what my mum did for me, my highchair had a 2ft ring of newspaper around it to catch the inevitable.

if you use a dustpan and brush with nylon bristles, they can be rinsed under the tap and washed in the sink.

Shower curtain under the high chair, pick up and shake outside afterwards

Thanks ladies!
Slight issue in that we live in a flat so no garden (and no compost heap) and it would be pretty rude for me to shake the dropped food onto the footpath outside! With DS1 I used a plastic sheet underneath the highchair but it doesn't really make any difference whether the food goes on the sheet or the (lino) floor, it still needs to be picked up and then the surface needs cleaning.

The dustpan and brush with the nylon brushes seems like a good option.

Your would not believe the amount of Milton I am using at the moment, and I really don't like anti-bacterial stuff normally!

Multi-surface wipes?

fengirl1 · 28/06/2012 19:30

I have a Vax floormate. It's brilliant - scrubs then sucks up dirty water.

gemma4d · 01/07/2012 22:54

Depending on what is on floor (liquid v crumbs):

Vacuum with a Gtech rechargeable sweeper

or

  1. do washing up. 2. Clean highchair and table with dishcloth. Rinse. 3. Scoop up floor mess with dish cloth, empty into bin, rinse in washing up water, repeat until clean. Stick cloth for the wash when done! So basically I just rely on washing-up liquid.

I have muslin cloths which I use for cleaning up the children, and often these are large enough to also get the worst off the highchair and table!

Finally, periodically push around the steam-cleaner and bleach dishcloths!

Rainydayagain · 02/07/2012 13:34

Use an e cloth wipe food up, rinse in sink, repeat. Spray a little multi surface onto floor repeat done.

It's only food, no need for milton. ( mine all survived) :-)

insancerre · 02/07/2012 13:37

in the nursery where I work we sweep with a dustpan and brush and mop with an anti-bac floor cleaner
you don't need milton

nosleepwithworry · 02/07/2012 13:37

I used a cheepo shower curtain under the highchair and table.
Roll it up after meal times, pop end into a plastic bag and shake food out.

I used to wipe it down each evening with a squirt of flash and a floor sponge. 2 minute job.

OR
throw away and get a new. very very cheep, less that £2 each.

nosleepwithworry · 02/07/2012 13:39

Also, very very cheepo babywipes to wipe over the shower curtain..then bin.
