HOW do I motivate myself out of extreme laziness?

I'm really Blush about this to the point I thought about nc but I'm extremely, extremely lazy.

We have an Ayi (cleaner/nanny type) so I don't need to clean. I don't work (can't on my visa) and have no responsibilities other than paying bills online, doing the big household jobs like un cluttering and looking after DD. DH works, DD is a really easy toddler but I'm 100% her main carer and as DH travels so much for work and she refuses to go to sleep for/with anyone else I do the bulk of her care.

However, I'm really, really super lazy and never get anything done. I have a to do list that is as long as my arm with everything from paying bills, going through the last of our boxes from moving in January, getting someone in to hang pictures, making phone calls and what have you. The house is messy (but clean) even though we have full time help.

How can I motivate myself to get off my arse and get stuff done? I don't like this personality aspect of myself but I don't know how to change.

Any advice?

We're you always this lazy comrade? Or is it since not being able to work?

I find that the more busy I am, work, kids, blah blah then the more I get done. If I've got a day off ie like today. I tend to sit on my arse bumming around the internet.

I do find that if I make A LIST and time myself to do jobs ie 15 mins to tidy up the living room then I get a cuppa. I manage to hoik myself off the computer.

Can you make a mini list with 3 jobs per day on ie, 9-midday clear box. 12 - 3 tidy lounge, 3 -5 drink gin pay bills?

Always lazy but definitely more so since having to change visas in 2008. It isn't an option to change visas to a working one now and I'd rather be home with DD anyway.

I absolutely recognise that the more I do the more I get done but I suppose it's starting that's the trick. I have good intentions but no follow through. How do you keep up with the follow through?

I suppose the answer is just get off your lazy arse and DO isn't it?

Thank's for the suggestion Claudia. I tried that today and swept quite a few things off my list.

i would do an hour's slot myself
whizz round.
paper work - hmm - grim. but Has to be done.
how about one chore in the morning and one hour's worth in the afternoon?

Comrade - this is your life. You only get one shot at it. Do you really want to look back & think you just couldn't be bothered?!
Could you do some volunteering somewhere? Sometimes you get lots more done when you are busy, then when you have too much time on your hands

I also do lists, I'm currently halfway through my day and CBA to do anything right now. I know how negative having full time help can be, we used to as well and I was worse then than now. I realised it actually made me feel like it's not my home, ifswim.

The FLYlay method works well for me, set a timer for 15 mins to do whichever task is needed. When it buzzes move on the something else. It's aimed at cleaning the house but you could adapt it.

Do you go out with DD, is she old enough for school? Volunteering is a good suggestion, mybe you could try that?

ClaudiaSchiffer · 27/06/2012 23:30

Also is there a particular time of day that's better for you. Ie get up, shower, make breakfast, DO SOME JOBS, have a coffee, DO SOME JOBS, then relax?

Also (here comes the nagging) I find if I exercise, then I'm full of zing and mad enthusiasm for the day ahead. If I crawl from bed to computer to school drop off and back to the computer I do tend to wallow a little.

Either set targets and work towards them or lower your expectations Smile

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/06/2012 14:14

Do you have an iPhone? I have an app on mine called home routines. It helps me stick to a routine or nowt gets done as I'm lazy too.

fedup2012 · 30/06/2012 14:23

I have stuff coming out of my ears to do, and I've been on here for 2 hours arseing about.

Postbellumbugsy has got it covered though - it's your life, you have to get on with it.

I like flylady too because it's about taking control. It's easy to find excuses not to do stuff, flylady doesn't let you make them.

TodaysAGoodDay · 30/06/2012 14:30

I reward myself. I'll set myself a time say 10 minutes, and do as much as I can in that time. Then I get a cuppa or watch TV or something. I do this 3 or 4 times a day (in between looking after DS) and it's amazing how much actually gets done.

Spookey80 · 30/06/2012 14:34

I dothe reward thing too, I.e I'm not allowed on mn unless I tidy the kitchen,
Helps me.....

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/06/2012 14:37

Im a natural procrastinator.

I find now that if I feel that little 'ooh Ill just do this' thought coming into my head (a rareity) I capitalise on it and whizz round doing four times the amount of stuff I thought of doing. However, if I can get out of doing something I will, even if I know it wilk come round and bite me on the arse later.

I have no helpfull hints but will be wqtching this thread to steal.some off others.

GnocchiNineDoors · 30/06/2012 14:39

Oh, just realised theres one thing I do...if the lounge is tidy, I like to relax in it. So I try and leave it messy until Ive done a few jobs. If I tidy it first I end up sat in it all day doing bot all else.
