Dishwasher leaving residue in glasses/bowls

Most times I empty the dishwasher there is this browny, gritty residue in the bottom of glasses, mugs and bowls that have been on the top shelf so I end up hand washing them as putting them through again doesn't get rid of it. It's really irritating!

Any suggestions what it could be? I've tried cleaning out filter at the bottom, adding salt (this maybe makes a slight improvement but doesn't solve it altogether), checking the arm that sprays the water is clean and yet it still happens.

Same problem here. I also cleaned filters and arms, top up salt and rinse aid, and use finish power ball tablets. Didn't really help. So I wash them by hand. Daft eh?

IS it always in the same place IYSWIM, I have this on glasses if they are in one of 2 particular spots on the top row.....

Or - if I've overstacked the bottom and there's not enough circulation room around stuff / or if one thing is over the bottom rack too much - like a big baking dish.

Play around with how you stack it - it may help.

Have you cleaned the arms themselves? They usually pop off or unscrew - my top one was minging when I worked out I could take it off....

Otherwise topping up the salt / keeping it well topped up is your best bet - even if you use an 'all in one' tab.

Have you cleaned the machine recently? I use either a cup of soda crystals or a ready made cleaner on the hottest wash weekly.

What your describing sounds like food particles, I scrape my plates into the bin with a spatula that goes through every cycle. Less work for the dw then.

yes, sandy residue is food particles.

Check the instructions and make sure you have removed and cleaned all the filters. Some have three layers of filter.

Take out the spinning arms and rinse them through in the sink. You will notice if they do not spin freely. If the dirt is always on the same part of the top shelf, there may be one or more choked jets.

If the plates are not very dirty, and you have added salt and are using a good tablet, verify that it is getting hot enough. Open the door mid-cycle and steam should billow out, and there should be no sign of the tablet because it should all have dissolved

Is there any chance that food could have dried on before the wash?

I have the same problem and would like to try your soda crystals tip, Fluffycloud, but where do you put it - in the dispenser?

Pendulum · 27/06/2012 06:15

A dishwasher cleaning product on a hot wash always sorts this for me.

If you are using multitabs, and your dishwasher has a multitab setting, turn it OFF. You don't need to keep using rinse aid, but you must keep using salt. Apparently the salt keeps the rinse mechanism clean and shiny.

I had this problem my google search for a solution brought me here. Following the suggestions I disassembled my dishwasher & cleaned everything - although it did not look dirty as it is not very old and I do a cleaning cycle regularly. I did find that there water distributor arms - if that is what they are called - had small bits of limescale poking out. Unable to split the arms open I repeatedly rinsed and shook them until most of the limescale pieces were gone and this seems to have solved the problem. I am planning to soak them in something that will dissolve the limescale of such a thing exists, & perhaps find a way to soften the water before it enters the machine.

Vinegar - like you would with a shower head that needs descaling.

Ours leaves weird red sandy residue on stuff. It is hugely reduced by very very careful stacking of the dishes, pre rinsing, and not over filling.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s not easier to just hand wash??

myusernamewastakenbyme · 05/03/2018 19:27

Mine does this every so often....I usually resort to doing a very hot empty wash with a tiny bit of bleach chucked in.....dishwasher then works like new until the next time...

Cleanerswin · 05/03/2018 19:45

XDPs DW used to do this. (One more reason not to miss him). I used to put salt and rinse aid in even with the 5 in 1 tabs he bought, clean out the spray arms and run a very hot wash with soda crystals. It worked.

SOLUTION:
I guarantee you’re using a liquid detergent??
Switch to tablets and within 3 months it will be completely clean. No idea why, who cares!… no vinegar, bleach, scrubbing etc. The source of the issue is the liquid detergent.
