Unpacking: is there an easier way to do it?

I moved house (wehey!), but now my new house is full of boxes and black bags. I'm trying to sort out one room at a time, but as they are all mixed up it's a bit difficult. Is there an easier way? I' have the bathroom and the kitchen almost sorted. The rest is a mess. Sad

We have all our boxes in the study/spare bedroom, partially unpacked & spread out so that you can't see the floor. We've shut the door & only go in to look for something in particular. We appear to be waiting for the unpacking fairies.

LadySybildeChocolate · 24/06/2012 18:33

Grin I leave wine and cookies out every night for the fairies, they've yet to turn up. {sobs} The study is crammed with boxes. My wardrobe is in the living room as it won't go up the stairs, it's chaos.

Grin If those unpacking fairies ever show up at yours then please send them on to mine, when they are done..

we moved two months ago, and are now finally starting to see the end of the boxes. We had 80 of them (!), and they were all stacked up high in the wrong rooms, even though I had prepared a floorplan of the new house as well as labelled all the boxes (for the movers). Our wardrobes were also in our living room, as according to the movers they would not fit upstairs (they do fit...)

Still I thought we were not doing too badly, until I heard that a colleague who moved at the beginning of thsi month had unpacked everything in less than a week. I must find out their secret before our next move....
(probably that's where all the unpacking fairies are...)

LadySybildeChocolate · 24/06/2012 19:06

Shock She must have had my fairies working for her! Angry

Well, so far today I've put as many of my clothes away as I can, done some more of the kitchen, cleared a path to the kitchen, washed clothes, cooked a roast, and put a shelf back into it's book case. Doesn't seem like a lot though. Blush

It must feel good to be able to see an end. I wrote on the boxes where they all needed to go also, they didn't read the instructions.

Next time get rid of all your unnecessary tat before you move?
I never manage to do it, either.

LadySybildeChocolate · 24/06/2012 19:20

It's hard to do that when you don't have a car, Adventures. I filled a few bins, 4 (or 5) car loads to the tip (thanks to a friend). All that's here is mostly useful. I do have a lot of books though. Blush

We have culled quite a few books, recently. I am working out a strategy for culling the very youngest baby/toddler books, too.

BloooCowWonders · 25/06/2012 12:50

We moved 6 months ago and still have some boxes in some rooms...
You have to give yourself some lee-way. The new place will need different organization and sometimes furniture too, so it takes more time than you think.
But that unpacking fairy is still not here :)

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 13:04

I can't get rid of my books! Shock

I write children's books, and ds reads them over and over again, so I need them really. [whistles and looks at the ceiling]

I'm really looking forward to it looking like a home, not a storage facility. Sad Nothing has been done today, I'm coming down with something flu like and feel exhausted.

OP posts:
BackforGood · 25/06/2012 13:27

I moved house when ds was just 3 weeks old.
I just sat on the settee. Sympathetic family and riends all came and unpacked a few boxes each and it was done by the day after we moved.

Of course, you might consider having a new baby a leetle bit drastic just to get some boxes unpacked ? Wink

Nonio · 25/06/2012 13:47

Ok we are on 21 moves in 23 years ( this is our last!?!). You can Mark boxes sort out crap and get the fairies in at the end for the day box blindness is heading your way.

If you have a spare room uses that (or the one side of a room not your family room) put all the boxes in there, take one box out at a time and sort it out including putting it away or getting rid of it.

It doesn't make it easier but less daunting

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 14:04

Hmm. I'd have to jump through hoops to have another baby, Back. It would be quicker to sort the house out myself.

21 moves in 23 years! Shock Goodness!

There's no spare room, everything's in the study (and all over the house). The bathroom's pretty empty though.

I've been out today and bought new cot sheets because I can't find the ones we had before we moved. There are about 12 boxes left to be unpacked and I've opened all of them for a rummage, but no sign of the sheets. Blush
We had a big clear out before we left, but we've culled another 2 boxes of stuff unpacking.

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 14:39

I'm pretty sure that I have some cot sheets. I was going to take them to the charity shop, you can have them if you want?

I was fairly organised, I'm just not sure where the fruit bowl is. It's not a huge problem on the scale of things. 12 boxes is nothing, you can do it!!

OP posts:
bronze · 25/06/2012 14:41

Sorry to say but it's about organisation beforehand. I can u pack everything we need in under a week easily though getting stuff into the attic can take longer

bronze · 25/06/2012 14:43

Having said that we moved here in September and I finally found my kitchen scales this week

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 14:44
Grin

Organisation is useless if the idiots moving your things put them all in the wrong rooms! Sad

OP posts:
bronze · 25/06/2012 14:52

You have to stand and direct proceedings

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 14:54

I was at the other end, telling them what to move. I thought I'd get away with writing where the boxes go on the top in thick black pen. Not a chance. The second removal company were a lot better though, only dumped a little in the study.

OP posts:
Nonio · 25/06/2012 14:54

The study it is then. Good luck

LadySybildeChocolate · 25/06/2012 14:55

Grin I actually want to move again and the thought of it doesn't fill me with dread anymore Just find me a house that doesn't make me I'll
AdoraBell · 25/06/2012 22:42

Could you use the FLYlady decluttering method, only instead of having boxes to keep, throw or recycle have them for different rooms. Empty 1 box/bag at a time, go off to do something different then do another.

Bleeding fairies never turned up here either Angry
