Ants in my kitchen

cahu · 17/06/2012 20:28

for the first time since I moved I into my house 4 years ago, I have ants in my kitchen. I put down the bait things 2 days ago but they are stlll here.

I have moved the baits to where I can see the ants disappearing to which is under an internal skirting board. Will this be enough to get rid of them?

Oh will be watching with interest.....We have ant's this year too! I put it down to the very mild winter and then the huge amount of rain, and they were now seeking shelter!

Have taken to just squashing them whenever I see them, washing everything in bleach and they slowly seem to be lessening in numbers.

Message.... The ironic thing is that my kitchen is the cleanest it's been in ages as I did a spring clean at half term .....I just do not want to see insects in my kitchen!

I have just read a tip to put Vaseline in any gap that the ants are getting through. That might help.

cahu · 17/06/2012 22:30

Thanks Fatsamgrandslam, I also read tonight that washing powder sprinkled along gap does the same. I want to think of them as dead rather than unable to get through skirting iyswim though! I apologise to animal lovers btw....

Ants in my kitchen too... watching with interest. The thread that is. Not the ants!

PigletJohn · 18/06/2012 15:22

Have you used Nippon Liquid yet?

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 18/06/2012 15:24

I had an invasion in my kitchen the other day. I got ant killer spray and sprayed it over the floor and door frame. No problems since

CMOTDibbler · 18/06/2012 15:27

You want these - ant invasion one day, dead ants the next.

Hairytoes · 18/06/2012 15:38

I second CMOTDibbler, worked a treat for us.

cahu · 18/06/2012 15:43

CMOTDibler, I put 2 of those bait stations down on friday and didn't expect to see any more ants but then panicked when I did..! I have come in from work today and can't see any but there was one on the worktop this morning when I got up... I haven't used any sprays yet as I thought the bait stations would be enough.

We live near the sea on sand so when we moved in there were ants everywhere in the kitchen. It took a long time before we found the absolute best stuff ever. Ant Stop. But it must be the bait and not the spray/powder. We put it down under unturned plant pots once a year and we never see ants again. We put one at the back of the house and one at the front. In fact, after four or so years, the ants seem to have gone altogether. The ants take the bait bakc to the nest and it kills the whole nest. I love ants actually-but in the garden, not the house. In the garden they can be anywhere they want. I'd say it takes about 2 weeks to work. It does need to kill whole nests after all.

ChristieF · 18/06/2012 17:39

That's up-turned plant pots. Upside down. I don't want cats or my dogs getting to the bait.

ChristieF · 18/06/2012 17:41

Also the bait is put outside the house (not indoors) next to the walls

Itchywoolyjumper · 18/06/2012 17:47

We had ants a few years ago. I poured boiling water on them whenever I saw them and into the hole they seemed to be coming out of. They stopped coming in pretty quickly after that and we haven't had them back despite having an ant hill in the garden and a toddler who spreads food all over the place.
I've just Googled it and I think it worked because I'd washed away the markers they used to make their trail. Might be worth a try, its cheap and it isn't toxic to anyone else.

cahu · 18/06/2012 20:11

Thanks you for your replies. They seem to be disappearing under an internal skirting board, Christie? I have 2 any stop baits next to the skirting which is an internal wall.... Do I need some outside too? Itchy, off to garden now armed with kettle!

If you are using nippon ant traps you need to give them a few days to work. It doesn't poison the ants straight away, they take it back to the nest where the concentration will build up.

You need to give it time to build up, esp if it is a big nest.

cahu · 18/06/2012 20:24

Ok, thanks, I'm using the ant stop baits but haven't seen any since this morning, so maybe I was just freaking a bit..

Well having two mini Jack Russells I wouldn't put anything poisonous inside the house. Even outside the bait goes under plant pots next to the house walls. One at the front and one at the back of the house. We haven't seen an ant inside for years. When we moved in the people here before had plastered behind the kitchen kickboards with ant powder. It didn't work. I cleaned it all up to stop dogs licking it. Ants are a major probelm where we live, but not anymore for us. They come through cavity walls and under skirting boards. We didn't need it inside, but then we have concrete floors. It is the best thing since sliced bread.

cahu · 21/06/2012 21:05

I have done as suggested and put a couple of baits outside under pots and the two original baits are still in the kitchen. Haven't seen an ant inside since Monday morning so fingers crossed.... Thanks for all your replies. x
