Spring cleaning - where do you start?

The house is in desperate need of a good clean, I had been putting it off until I replaced our crappy hoover, but now we have an all singing, all dancing super sucker I have no excuse.

We are having some decorating done in a couple of weeks, so want the house clean and tidy beforehand.

Where do I start? Our bedroom, the sitting room and the kitchen are the most desperate I think. Should I start with those or the easier rooms?

Thank you.

Even though my house is not that tidy, I know how to do general 'housekeeping' but this spring clean thing is still a bit of a mystery! :o

I think I will start by clearing surfaces in the bedrooms, tidying the floors and giving them a bloody good Hoover, then tackle wardrobes..... (one of our wardrobes is a bit like Narnia!)

get a cleaner

MrsNouveauRichards · 14/06/2012 16:29

I wish! Even the prospect of a cleaner visiting the house to clean would get my arse in gear, so maybe...hmm

I usually get a glass of wine and survey the mess, then cry a bit and then do it room by room, left to right, top to bottom.
And get rid of clutter.

BasilDonna · 14/06/2012 16:31

Declutter first, then get cleaning.
No good just shifting bits around.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 14/06/2012 16:46

Ok, here's my list that I print off once a year and tick off when done.
I need someone to tell me exactly what to do, so it's stupidly specific, is that what you want?

Bedrooms:
Open the window.
Put everything away first, then move furniture into the middle of the room.
Damp dust skirting boards, wash windows and window sills.
Replace paper on top of wardrobes/bookshelves. Hoover.
Furniture back, hoover again.
Strip bed, hoover mattress and flip it. Put sheets on.

Sitting Room:
Open windows.
Pull furniture out and hoover behind.
Damp Dust skirting boards.
Wash windows and window sills
Furniture back and hoover again
Declutter magazines, papers lying around
Damp dust any horizontal surfaces, tv etc
Microfibre cloth for glass/mirrors

Kitchen:
Open window.
Declutter papers, and things that have accumulated on work surfaces
Empty dw and have it cleaned, ready for use.
Replace paper on top of cupboards.
Wash down doors of cupboards and shelves of food cupboards.
Wash windows and window sills.
Clean fridge out
Pull out microwave and toaster and damp dust behind.
Clean out cutlery drawers.
Hoover and mop

Bathroom:
Open windows.
Wash walls.
Clean toilet, sink, bath as usual.
Wash behind toilet and sink with damp cloth
Use microfibre cloth on glass/mirrors
Wash window and sill

Ooh, lovely thank you. How long does that take you?

what is this paper on top of cupboards? Am I missing something? You sound very organised!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 14/06/2012 17:03

Maybe 40 mins per bedroom and sitting room, 15 in bathroom, 30 in kitchen and another ten mins in the hall, so for me is about 2 hours.

Flipflopper I have newspaper on top of he cupboards and wardrobes so when it's very dusty I can just fold it up and throw in the bin and replace so as not to raise dust.
I am definitely not very organise, I only do a deep clean like this twice a year Blush and the tidying up before hand probably takes the same time again Blush

MrsNouveauRichards · 14/06/2012 17:19

Oh, I was thinking a week Blush

I did a quick 5mins in our room earlier - quick tidy of stuff on floor, dusted (and removed cup marks -slattern) the bedside table, chucked out some random bits of rubbish and put some clean bedding away.

Not going to get much chance of doing stuff this evening, but hoping to crack on tomorrow as much as possible with limpet boy following me around everywhere.

But you can just do one room a day? It doesn't have to be all in one day, I just do it like that as dp willtake the kids out for the day, if I had them there, nothing would be done :)
Any start is good, it's getting the motivation to keep going where I fall down :(

MrsNouveauRichards · 15/06/2012 17:09

Not done as much as I hoped today, but DH and I are going to have a good 'session' :o after dinner while the kids watch a film.
