How do I make online shopping work for me?

Whenever I have done it it always seems to take an hour, the same as a physical shop. It is also an hour in the evening, precious childfree time. Anyway we might be without a car in the day, so reconsidering it. Is there anything to make it faster, do apps help? I willl probably still need to go and get meat and veg, as use by dates never tally with my menu etc. But hoping to cut physical shop to 20 min by doing a fortnightly online shop. Does this sound reasonable?

Not sure which site you are using but for example with Tesco it stores your favourites so it takes no time at all to shop - most weeks I buy a lot of the same basics like bread, milk etc. When everything arrives I sort out the meat/fish by use-by date so I remember what needs using first etc.

I do the same, but also have the app which I use to add in bits as I realise I need them. Things like shampoo and pasta that I only really need to buy every 2 months or whatever.

I use Ocado and they usually keep all my 'usuals' under a tab so it's usually quick. Lately I've been trying to do more comparison online shopping, so was cross-checking prices across Asda/Tesco/Sains - now trying out mysupermarket which automates the comparison - but since new to this is taking longer than usual. Once you've used a service a couple of times it becomes faster (your favourites are tracked etc.). Am pretty sure you can set up a standard shopping list and add it all with the click of a button.

I use Ocado and have the iPhone app, you can just add things to your basket as you realise you need them, then when it's time to place an order they have an 'instant shop' which has all my usual items in it, them a quick browse through the offers and i can do it in less than 10 mins. You can also place the next order with exact copy of most recent order then tweak it nearer the time.

Don't you freeze meats/ fish etc? As soon as delivered even with 5 days left etc I freeze all bar next days fresh meat etc as stays so much fresher, just take out eve before or on day

Ocado- takes about 10 mins, the more you shop with one company the quicker it gets as it learns what products you usually buy do they go to the top.

I do use the favourites, but by the time I've checked the offers etc it is still about an hour. I know I could avoid the offers, but I am a sucker for a BOGOF!

Unfortunately we don't have loads of freezer space, and we need certain meals on certain days (e.g. Casserole on swimming days when it has to cook itself while we are out). Will look into getting an app though as could convert MN time into shopping time!

I don't buy fresh food online, only non-perishables (water, oil, loo roll, tins, cling film, batteries...). I do a monthly shop and have it delivered first thing in the morning.

forevergreek · 12/06/2012 22:52

Ah we only have a 3 drawer freezer but plenty of space to use a drawer just for fresh meats/ fish ( rarely buy whole chicken/ joints though)

Never get sucked into Bogof. If I didn't want I before I log on then suddenly seeing 2 of something doesn't make me need to buy it.

We also don't snack apart from fruit so saves buying them.

Try stocking up once a month/ 2/3 months if space on non perishables. Then it's only fresh each week and quicker

So for exam

forevergreek · 12/06/2012 22:54

*for example we prob only buy rice/ pasta/ tin anything/ baking essentials every 3 months.

So each week only buy fresh as I know there's enough of everything else.

I only get the offers if I want them, but things like dishwasher tablets, our dishwasher is fussy and only seems to be able to use fairy on the quick wash, they aren't a regular purchase, as I only buy when on offer, but I need to check when on offer iyswim. I tend to fill the freezer with things for packed lunch like jelly and sandwiches so I can have a less manic morning, or I will cook double of something when on offer to use on a manic afterschool activity day. I will try the monthly non perishables online though I think, see if I can get into a routine with that. Thanks for all the tips.
