Steam generating iron

After uming and awhing for ages about whether to get a steam generating iron, I finally took the plunge.

Am so glad I did. It's bloody amazing and has cut my ironing time down in half.

I ended up getting the Philips GC8340/02 which is £139 on Amazon at the mo (just came top in Which? Testing) but its seems to vary in price from Comet, Currys etc - around
£200.

Was set up s d working within 5 muns of unpacking it. Ridiculously easy to use. I had saved up washing to iron pending its arrival.

A lot of money, but I loves it already I do!!

Just thought I'd share....

I know. I got one a few weeks ago.

There is now nothing clothes wise in our house that isn't ironed (excluding pants/socks as I draw the line!) or waiting to be washed.

I do two loads in the week, and it takes me about 1/2 an hour each time; compared to about 3-4 hours each time. TBF, I also bought one of those board covers that irons the other side as well.

I luff my iron!

ChopstheScarletduck · 30/05/2012 08:26

Yep, they are great. I had to iron a shirt for dd this morning, and didn't bother putting the water in. It took three times as long! I don't know how my poor mum used to iron without steam all those years. She had a normal steam iron, but wouldn't put water in it cos it made the clothes damp. Hmm

ErnesttheBavarian · 30/05/2012 08:40

I got one and i hate it. Was £££ so dont feel able o just chuck it. I cant say ive noticed it cutting own on ironing time, but my biggest hate is how noisy it is. I cant hear the tv over it, nor can anyone else. I cant iron in the evenings or at night, it even stops the dc getting to sleep.

When iy dies ill replace with a normal steam iron.

bruffin · 30/05/2012 08:46

I have a philips and I love it, Yes it makes a loud noise but its only every so often and I watch tv while ironing.

ChopstheScarletduck · 30/05/2012 08:57

the steam thing is noisy on mine, but not so far as I can't watch tv over it. I wonder if yours is faulty, Ernest

CarpeJugulum · 30/05/2012 09:04

Mine's a Phillips too - and makes the odd noise when pulling water into the heaty bit but other than a bit of steam noise, it's quite quiet.

Think yours may be dodgy Ernest Sad

SleepyFergus · 30/05/2012 09:57

Can be a bit noisy but I can still watch tv. Mind you, I do everything on full steam....just cos I can!!

I love mine too... But be careful if you live in a hard water area.
Lime scale completely buggers up to steam flow! Sad

RiskItForABiscuit · 30/05/2012 18:10

Can I ask what the difference is between this iron and a steam iron that only costs £30 or thereabouts?

CarpeJugulum · 30/05/2012 18:15

Erm, a steam generator iron can be set to have steam coming out all the time.

The steam is also quite powerful and wonderful!

ChopstheScarletduck · 30/05/2012 18:18

the other really good thing is that they are a lot lighter to use than normal irons, since the steam is in a reservoir rather than the actual iron.

bruffin · 30/05/2012 18:18

its got more powerful steam ie you can iron through layers of sheets without turning them over and you don't have to keep filling it up because of the large water tank.
Also the iron itself is lot less bulky and lighter.

RiskItForABiscuit · 30/05/2012 18:58

Thanks for the explanations. I do have to refill my iron quite often to keep the steam going so that explains the difference nicely.

The more expensive one probably doesn't drip water occassionally on the ironing board either, unlike my cheapie version.

Off to amazon now to look at new irons.

Babylon1 · 30/05/2012 19:01

I adore mine, had it just over a year now. It's quiet and it has a relaxing colour changing water tank for more therapeutic ironing Hmm

I loves ironing though Confused Grin

CarpeJugulum · 30/05/2012 19:22

This Phillips iron is the iron I have.

T'is magic!

SleepyFergus · 30/05/2012 19:51

This is mine www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0051UGYY0/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1338403820&sr=8-1

Oh hell, I am sadly so in love with my new Phillips iron, I've been bothered motivated to post!

Mine is also noisy and I struggle to hear the tv. However, with 4dds, it makes light work of all their dresses, skirts etc.

I live in London and have been putting boiled water in the water reservoir. That is as good as distilled water? Does anyone else do this?

Best think about the iron is it is all ironed at the same temp, no accidental burning!
