Any idea how to get rid of limescale on granote/marble. It's around the base of the taps. Would Viacal ruin the work surface??

marble is made of limescale, so what dissolves one will dissolve the other.

Granite is not.

Sadly, saving up to buy a water softener is the only real solution I know.

I use vinegar on granite, no idea what to use if it's marble. Sorry.

Viacal will wreck it if it's marble, and clean it if it's granite. As I doubt it's a composite, which is it, marble or granite?

If it IS marble, you may have to carefully scrape the limescale off with a sharp knife, taking care of the surface - and once you've got it clean, go to a hardware shop and get a sealant for it to make it easier to clean later.

I've just checked with the hubby..it's granite.
I thought acid affected granite..or is it marble that it messess up?
I have some off cuts, so I could try both vinegar and viacal if that doesn't work.
Many Thanks

If it's granite, you'll be fine. It's marble that is the soft rock that is made of calcium carbonate (the same as limescale) and will be etched/dissolved by acid and viacal.

HI

i have the answer to your problem. It was recommended to me by the guys who install these granite work tops.

You can get them in Aldi and Waitrose and probably other supermarkets. They are normally used for cleaning saucepans. They are silver scrubby thingies and they are coiled up into a circle. You normally get four to a packet.

They may be called scourers (not brillo pads though) and they work beautifully at removing limescale on granite and shower doors. I work as a cleaner and I always have them to hand. Don't worry they do not scratch but just to make sure, just try in a small spot to start with.

Cheap too as you don't need to use any chemicals, just water or maybe a little washing up liquid. I also use them to clean limescale from the edges of stainless steel kettles with no scratching problems.

Hope this helps. I joined especially to share this information! :)
