Teach me how to use a toilet brush (no, really!)

I'm doing something wrong surely? When youve scrubbed the skidmarks how DO you get the detritus off the bristles? I seem to end up with a speckled brush going back in the holder thingy, which HAS to be way more unhygenic than any temporary skidmark in the pan. Then the toilet brush turns a nasty colour and i have to buy a new one. Theres clearly some universal secret which you all know but my mother never told me. Tell me, tell me now.

( i do have a life, honest.......)

  1. Use Toilet Cleaner in the bowl before brushing
  2. Flush the toilet at the same time a holding the brush under the main stream of water (usually at the front of the bowl)

Good Luck

I buy toilet brushes from ikea this cheap a 45p and if it remotely bad I can bin it. In defence of my landfill I do recycle everything, upcycle and even make the extra effort to do tetra pack recycling etc

I get my children to tell me if they leave a skid that way I use a kandoo wipe so I never use the toilet brush to clean poo off. If the poo is stuck on I would use a cheap "basic" sponge from the supermarket and bin that. I do tend to cut them in half scrimper so even though they are 20p for 5, I like more of a bargain.

The toilet brush cleans the toilet and you can leave it to soak in bleach in the base that comes with it. Mine is used to keep limescale at bay.

Sorry when I say use a sponge I mean the green scouring side.

Seona1973 · 22/05/2012 08:03

I dont use it for skid marks, just for limescale marks and crud around the underside of the rim. Poo should be removed from the toilet bowl by the offender with a bit of toilet roll as part of their bum wiping routine.

WipsGlitter · 22/05/2012 08:06

Use to remove skids. Flush. Shake brush in bowl. Flush again holding brush in water stream. I can't believe people use toilet paper Shock what if the skid is below the waterline?

Bleach down toilet and round bowl, scrub with brush, place brush in toilet water for an hour to soak in bleach colution. Flush to rinse off after an hour. Comes out pristine.

Shock at toilet brush in the dishwasher. Still, I think dishwashers are meant to sterilise everything, aren't they?

I love the idea if the 1 hour plus toilet cleaning routine, but we only have one bathroom!

DowntrodAbbey · 22/05/2012 23:18

I consider myself helped! Thanks everyone
Genius on the whole "put bleach down then leave brush in to soak too" thing.

Not sure about the dishwasher though. It's the whole idea of toilet brush winnets sloshing around on the cutlery and crockery - eeeuuugggh.

Urgh. Poo brushes.

CremeEggThief · 23/05/2012 20:16

Toilet brush in the dishwasher? Shock.

Please tell me nobody does this! Or at least if they do, they put it in on its own and then run the dishwasher empty on intensive immediately after.
This is what I do with things like kitchen caddies and pet bowls. Doesn't everyone??
