Is it only me who actually likes people better if their house is a bit scuzzy?

I had an operation last week, and have now got an infection in one of the wounds so I'm not up to much cleaning. Someone is popping over to see me in a bit and I'm panicking, because even though I gave the place a good clean before I went in to hospital, the bathroom etc could really do with a once over. I'm here worrying that this friend will judge me harshly, but actually if I ever pop in to see friends and the carpet's a but fluffy, or there are a few toothpaste marks in the sink, I actually think "phew, it's not just me" and actually view the friend as a bit more human and less uptight! I'm not talking out and out minging, just slightly scuzzy (like my house is most of the time). Anyone else find this?

Yes. I also like people whose children aren't CONSTANTLY saying "please" and "thank you".

pictish · 20/05/2012 11:06

Yes!

I am always relieved to be shown into a house that is clearly lived in! Then i feel like i wouldn't mind inviting that person to my similarly lived in house.

Having an immaculate show home is very impressive, but I never seem to end up being great friends with the occupants....give me a relaxing, welcoming functioning house to visit any day!

Iggly · 20/05/2012 11:08

Yes.

Although I went to a good friend's house the other day and needed the loo.

She'd left huge skid marks in the bowl, even under the water. Must have been her as her DCs are not potty trained and her DH was away...

I couldn't quite meet her eye for a bit Grin

Would you actively dislike someone whose house was immaculate?

pictish · 20/05/2012 11:10

No - I certainly wouldn't actively dislike them if there house was immaculate - what an odd thing to suggest! I just don't seem to have any close friends who care that much about presentation, that's all.

pinkhousesarebest · 20/05/2012 11:12

Yes. But even better if they have an untidy car!

pictish · 20/05/2012 11:13

That's a lie - I do have one close friend who's place is always scrubbed and organised to within an inch of its life. Just the one though. Wink

PrimaBallerina · 20/05/2012 11:13

I've seen skid marks at other people's houses too! Have they no shame?

But yes, a bit of the right sort of dirt is a comfort.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 20/05/2012 11:14

No of course I wouldn't actively dislike someone who's house is immaculate! I would just feel slightly jealous that they were far more organised and together than me! I was just reflecting that I get in such a panic about the place being clean when someone is coming round, when they are unlikely to judge or dislike me because my house isn't spotless, if they think the sane way I do that is. Oh and btw sorry about the appalling grammar in the thread title! Blush

Oh my car is always shameful pink! There is always an emergency chucking of rubbish into a carrier bag when I have to unexpectedly give someone a lift! Grin

The only thing I don't like is if a person dresses immaculately and then their house is really messy, I kind of feel differently about them.

LemonTurd · 20/05/2012 11:17

Don't think my post was that odd? Hmm

I know people with immaculate, show-home type houses. I don't warm to them any less, I just think they have different priorities to me.

My place is always rather disorganised.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 20/05/2012 11:22

I have a friend like that ebb! It always puzzles me, she is always immaculate, has an amazing figure that takes a lot of work to maintain - she looks like a model basically. But go to her house and she is a slattern! She is lovely though, and whilst i do find it odd, I don't like her any less. Tbh it probably makes her more human, as at least she has one flaw! Wink

My oldest friend asked me not to clean before she visited last time because it makes her feel better about her house if mine's not too tidy!

Big sigh of relief as I only ever do a big clean when I have visitors and then I'm too worn out to enjoy them! I did feel slightly on edge, spying the dust all over the surfaces while drinking a cuppa, so we just went out instead - win win Grin

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 20/05/2012 11:32

It's weird how we set ourself these high standards isn't it? It's as though we'd prefer it if people were slightly jealous of us than actually like us!
