Magimix food processor, which size?

I am thinkning to purchase a Magimix food processor, but having a look on the website, they do different sizes...... and each size comes in standard or XL model, for example, 3200, 3200 XL, 4200, 4200XL.....

I am not sure which one to choose! we are a small family but I like to entertain and also make things in a big quantity so I can freeze them. so thinking maybe 4200? but 3200 will be sufficient too? please give me some ideas.....

also, the XL model has a bigger feeder which means easier to feed the tomatoes and potatoes? and is it useful to have this function? or not necessary? please can someone have the Magimix give me some ideas and advises, all will be very much appreciated!

Thank you!

I have the 4200 and its just the two of us at the moment. I wanted one that would suit us in the future and when cooking for more people and I think it is a good size for this. I don't have the XL one and still find I can slice potatoes well enough. It really is a great machine.

I'm so tempted to buy a food processor, but find I never use the beggar. I have a hand whisk, and I find it quicker (or just as quick but with less washing up and noise) to do all the slicing with the mandoline, the chopping by hand. Even kneading I enjoy, and mixing a cake up is so much more effective by hand.

But I'd still love a magimix - at least they look good on the worktop. Can you whisk with them though?

Treated myself to a 4200XL at Christmas - chose XL because I would have got a juicer I didn't need with the 4200, but in retrospect regret the XL bit for 2 main reasons:

  1. The XL tube is so large you could theoretically get your hand into it, so there's safety mechanism that only lets the machine start if you have the XL pusher in place. This means that even though you can get wide potatoes etc. into the tube, if they are too high, the pusher won't go down far enough and the machine won't start.

  2. To stabilise the XL tube and pusher (keep them rigid), they have lots of fins on the plastic which makes them a pain to wash and dry.

Hope that makes sense!

The machine chops, grates and slices amazingly quickly but you have to accept that some of the bits won't be as even as if you'd done all that work by hand. It's much better than the ancient food processor I had before.

There are 4 of us and 4200 seems to be a good size.

I just actually enjoy the whole mixing thing by hand. I have a hand whisker but could do with a slicer/chopper but I do think that by the time you've got the machine set up you could have chopped by hand or sliced with a mandoline. Sorry, I don't want to rain on your parade, just sharing Smile. Perhaps I'll treat myself to a new mandoline

I have the 4200 and I used to keep it in a cupboard unless I needed it. I've since had a kitchen clear out and keep it on the counter (the extra attachments box is still in a cupboard) and now use it tons. It's so much quicker for slicing and grating, including washing up time!

Horsetowater · 16/05/2012 21:19

Oh please don't tempt me medjool, I've got a cupboard full of underused gizmos.

I think I use a hand whisk once or twice a week, the popcorn maker once a week, the hand blender once a week and all the other ones just make too much noise for me to want to bother with. I like the touchy feely aspect of cooking, the rubbing in, the kneading, the folding, beating. I AM the food mixer.

But perhaps I should get one just in case.

Ponders · 16/05/2012 21:29

I've got the 3200, which tucks neatly under a wall cupboard, but I don't know if the bigger ones are any taller

I haven't used it that much; cooking for 4-5 adults I have to do slicing etc in batches, but I suspect I would even with a bigger one.

mine came from \link{http://www.hartsofstur.com/acatalog/Magimix_3200_Food_Processor.html\Harts of Stur} - was a bit cheaper than this, but no free accessory set!

medjool · 16/05/2012 21:34

I use mine more now because I'm fed up of grating my fingers. Having said that, blades are v. sharp. The first time I ever used my processor, I was careful not to catch my fingers putting in the slicing/grating blade, was careful taking it out, washing it up - and then picked it up to dry it and nearly sliced off my finger (did slice through a considerable amount of it).

OP - you'd only use the feed tube for grating and slicing, or for liquid if making a sauce/dip/dough. I've always had to chop up my veg to fit through the feed tube and it takes no time at all.

Ponders · 16/05/2012 21:38

I also sliced a finger on a blade, medjool - they are lethal Grin

Horsetowater · 16/05/2012 22:16

I've got two mandolines - one that I use, that's about xx years old and very basic, the other is in cupboard wrapped in cardboard and newspaper because it's absolutely lethal and I don't think I've ever used it.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 17/05/2012 07:59

I have a 3000 I think. It's the small one. I love it!

I've used it to slice potatoes and it coped fine with slicing potatoes to make dauphinoise for 6 adults. HTH :)

thanks for all your replies!

i think I am getting a 4200 model, but still deciding for the 4200 or 4200XL.....

thanks!

You must think of the purpose of your food processor! Is it for hobby or business? What amount of volume of work will it do? everyday? or weekly?

I have bought mine here and choose which is best for you Go Electrical!
