I really don't get why my washing never smells all yummy like other people's.

Even if I use a detergent that costs £££ it still comes out not smelling of anything very much really.
I love it when I stay at my mum's house and she puts a wash on and it all comes out smelling divine .... I want that at my house too !!!

This has been the case over a long period of time and I think it must be me as even when i have changed my washing machine i still have the same issue.

I always think about this very problem too. I smell my dsis kids and they always smell so adorable, of shampoo and washing... and my dd, well she just smells of nothingness really, the occassional farty smell and yucky fingers.

Dropdeadfred · 15/05/2012 13:18

Is your washing machine clean inside?? Perhaps try running a boil wash on empty ... Also consider it may be a bit like perfume.. You notice other people's but can't really smell your own?
How do you dry it? If its dried on a clothes horse it doesn't ever smell as nice as line dried in the sun or tumbledried

oohermrs · 15/05/2012 13:23

Agree with dropdeadfred it's probably your washing machine. If you don't use the boil wash often enough it can get yukky. Just run the highest temp setting with nothing in to give it a clean.

WarriorQueen · 15/05/2012 13:24

I don't ever run a boil wash
I do a 60 wash for whites but that is as high as i go.

will do that now.

What detergent do you guys use?

I use various - I like bold but still add Lenori concentrate

oohermrs · 15/05/2012 13:31

I use Ariel with fabreeze cause I've got pets and DSs and need all the help I can get! Does smell nice though.

WarriorQueen · 15/05/2012 13:37

i always line or tumble dry so it must be the washing machine, hoping this hot wash might help.

either that or i have no sense of smell! Hmm

Are you using enough detergent for the machine?

bibbitybobbitybunny · 15/05/2012 14:28

Fairy non bio powder is the nicest smelling washing powder there is (and also the most expensive Sad) but Sainsbury's non-bio tablets smell lovely too.

Tumble dried clothes lose all their fragrance.

MamaMaiasaura · 15/05/2012 14:28

Run hot boil wash with nothing but white vinegar in machine

MamaMaiasaura · 15/05/2012 14:29

It's called a maintenance wash. Was whole thread o it a while ago and there was women up and down country doing maintenance washes

Dropdeadfred · 15/05/2012 14:30

I love fairy too - reminds me of the smell of my dd's clothes when she was a baby
My tumble dried clothes don't lose their fragrance though!

Imo one of the key tricks is to keep changing your detergent and conditioner and then you will notic each time you change it.

howhardcanthisbe · 15/05/2012 14:34

Our washing doesn't smell nice if DH does it. He doesn't use enough powder or softener. I put loads in and get compliments on how nice it smells and how White my whites are. I use Persil non bio and comfort pure

ShatnersBassoon · 15/05/2012 14:38

I bought a bottle of Lenor with Febreze a couple of months ago in a moment of madness, and it made the laundry very very perfumed. It wasn't unpleasant, just a far stronger smell than I'm used to from my supermarket own softener.

I put a pair of trousers on this morning that I haven't worn for ages and that I'd obviously washed with the Febreze stuff, and they still smell strongly of it and I can smell it now when I'm just sitting here.

perceptionreality · 15/05/2012 14:45

I use Persil liquid and Lenor Infusions and my washing always smells lovely with that. I used to use Fairy, it smells great but I stopped because it doesn't get all stains out.

WarriorQueen · 15/05/2012 14:49

I was thinking that maybe I was not using enough for the machine. I am going to hunt out the manual and have a look

Another vote for persil liquid. The bIo one smells nicest.

My eczema prone DC do not suffer either (as they DO with softeners)
