Does your wood furniture have to match?

We're getting a solid oak sideboard for our living room, and I'm now looking into getting a coffee table. I like one that's from the same manufacturer but is made from mango wood, but will it look silly as it's a slightly darker wood, plus from a different range?

There is a coffee table available to match the sideboard but I don't like it quite as much...

Thanks in advance.

its something that always confuses me too. i have no idea about the best way to match these things without looking ott.

I wondered if it depends on the sort of house - like really old places lends themselves to character so mismatched furniture looks ok, but in modern places it's more about presentation and consistency. We're short of in between - house was built in early 70s.

yes, i think it does depend. my house is 1897, i buy alot of art deco stuff, but dont want to tip over the line into some sort of period drama set up. All my wood is clashing, so everrything is in different rooms. i think, roughly, dark wood with like, medium with like etc because within that there are still several shades different?

So I guess, the answer is....go for it with the different wood. but dont match....
