Silk filled duvets

I can finally afford to replace our horrid old hollow fibre duvet, and I've always wanted a silk filled duvet (or equally luxurious alternative, having slept under cheap duvets all my life!)

Before I shell out, i have a few questions....

Will the 9 tog be warm enough - we normally have a 13.5 tog hollow fibre

Is it true that they are not washable? If so, what do you do to freshen it up and clean it? (DH sweats a lot and it can get a bit whiffy)

If I do go for it, am I condemned to a life of uber-expensive bedding to go with said duvet as my sad old duvet covers just wouldn't do it justiceGrin

We have a silk filled duvet and it is lovely - feels light and fresh, yet keeps us warm. I can't remember what tog we have, but we have two - one for summer and one for winter. We didn't actually get the winter one out this winter, and apart from a couple of nights when I chucked a throw on the bed, we were plenty warm enough. So I'd suggest just getting one and seeing how you get on.

Ours say dry clean only, and I get them done once a year, at the end of the 'season' (suddenly realises this is probably a bit gross, in defence of my grossness, I do change the sheets regularly though, and air the duvet too).

I'd get silk again, but won't be doing so for a while, as these are still as good as new (3 or 4 years old)

i wouldn't like a duvet that can't be washed. i've read that you shouldn't dry clean duvets as the nasty chemicals they use stay in the duvet - so you inhale them all night. not sure how true it is but it put me off!

we have a spundown duvet. it is all manmade but very light and fluffy and even the kingsize version fits in a domestic machine. which is the main reason we bought it - combination of asthmatic dh and a bed loving staffy means i like to be able to wash the duvet regularly.
