New pillows - how often do you buy them?

I have been sleeping really badly and so bought new pillows today. They are amazingly comfortable. I've just realised the old ones were four years old. How often are you supposed to change them?

Ooh, I'm interested in this. Out of interest, what sort did you get?

golemmings · 06/05/2012 22:31

We bought ours to replace the ones we inherited from my gran a decade ago...

FashionEaster · 06/05/2012 22:32

Mine are about 2 years old & darn uncomfortable - they start out ok but as soon as they're washed they lose all their pouf.

Givingupmyjob · 06/05/2012 22:34

Westwinger they are dorma Hungarian goose down. They are amazingly soft and as soon as you take your head off them they puff back up again as if by magic. Were expensive IMO at £50 each but think they are worth it!

When I was rich due to not having children I used to buy new pillows in the sales annually - always cheap pillows though, hence only lasting a year. Cheap pillows being made to last several years are really rubbish. I recently brough some feather and down ones which I had high hopes for - but they were rubbish and I've swopped mine for ds' new cheap ikea one (on account of him getting a bed rather than cot) he doesn't seem to mind and at them moment the new pillow is lovely.

HTH Grin watching with interest. How often do people get new mattresses? and does a mattress last longer on a divan rather than a slatted bedframe??

wonderstuff · 06/05/2012 22:36

Ours were only £25 each - how long does a £50 pillow last???

Givingupmyjob · 06/05/2012 22:39

A good while I hope Grin. They have a thee year guarantee. Have just invested in a new mattress too since they were less than half price in Argos so managed to get a £1200 mattress for less than £500. Feel very frivolous spending all this money in sleep but I am desperately in need of decent rest!

I bought Dunlopillo rubber pillows 15 years ago and they are like new (they go in washing machine). These days they are £50 to £60 each and worth every penny. People who have bought them on my recommendation have raved about how they will never buy anything but now.

wonderstuff · 06/05/2012 22:45

Sounds good - investment in sleep is worth it I think - when I got our duvet (feather - £60 or 70 half price in Debs sale) about 5 years ago I thought that was a lot to spend, felt quite guilty - honestly the best money I have ever spent - I love it, so warm and comfy.

FashionEaster · 06/05/2012 22:49

Happy to pay for quality pillows but as daft as it sounds, am bird phobic, which includes feathers, [shudder] @ thought of my head resting on them

FashionEaster · 06/05/2012 22:50

Dunlopillo rubber pillows?? Off to google!

thenightsky · 06/05/2012 22:53

fashion here

I bought some soft and some medium. I tried hard, but they were way too hard.

FashionEaster · 06/05/2012 22:57

TheNightSky, thank you!

Grockle · 06/05/2012 23:16

I have a dunlopillo, after being fed up with cheap rubbish ones. I love it.

mumo3g · 07/05/2012 22:30

Just a tip if you want to know if your pillow's have life in them still...

Hold it over your arm if it droops either side it's time for a new one. If it still stays straight then they are ok for now.

Newtothisstuff · 07/05/2012 22:45

My DH is obsessed with buying new pillows we get them at least every 6 months ! His latest purchase is iPod pillows (I've never actually used the iPod bit haha) comfy tho
