Art - what do you have on your walls ?

We've had our house painted recently so at the weekend, Dh got his drill up with the intention of putting our 'art' on the walls. Looking at it, I've gone off most of it as it's around 10 yrs old. I had a bit of a thing about Mackenzie Thorpe a few years ago & have a few limited editions, which are ok, the rest is tat.

Would like to buy maybe 1 or 2 decent prints/limited editions, but not seeing anything I fancy. ( not liking black & white yachts/Edward Hopper/doug Hyde)

Any suggestions ? Local art shops not got much going on either :-/

We have photographs of a local landmark taken by a local photographer who sells them at a farmers market. Also a limited edition print we received when we got married.

I may also have this up in my utility room to hide where a shelf fell down

nagynolonger · 01/05/2012 20:44

Watercolours of the area painted by local artist who sells them for a local charity. A couple of pictures DS did for GCSE art, and some family photographs.

We have some paintings that were MILs in the loft. No way are they going on the wall.

feedthegoat · 01/05/2012 20:51

We mainly have photographs up, both of ds and places we have visited.

There is a knock off Jackson Pollock alike above the fire place. Other than that we just have a Pete Mckee print in the conservatory which I love as it feels personal...it is the queue outside The Leadmill, which we frequented in our distant youth!

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 21:10

We have somehow ended up with lots of original pictures on the walls. I am not quite sure how it has happened but it feels quite nice!

We have artists in the family though and have bought a few bits ourselves when on holiday and stuff, also I bought a lovely pic from our local art society show which I went to by accident!

Why not put up the bits you have got with a view to replacing them gradually over the next few years? You never know when you are going to see something that you love whether an original, print or poster and looking at pictures is always enjoyable!

Some contemporary stuff from Eleanor Wood, Elizabeth Humphries and others. Not to everyone's taste but they are to mine Smile. Textile art and photos of the family.

madwomanintheattic · 01/05/2012 21:54

I have a huge canvas of a bear in rainbow colours. Grin , and lots of pictures from places we have been in the world, from pencil stuff of the town where I was born and the church we got married in, to 'windows on the west' from when we lived in glasgae, to aboriginal stuff when we were in oz, a huge painting of a pebbled beach on the coast of Vancouver island (which we got before every man and his dog bought pebbly shite from ikea)

My house is, um, eclectic. It has no style at all. We buy what we like and Put it up somewhere...

Oh, I also have All the school pictures of the kids going up the stairs in the hall (they are mine and I love them) and dh's many gazillions of military presentations stacked up whilst we find a home for them. Also some rennie mackintosh knock-offs that a freind's sister did.

And a big canoe 'pointing the way' over the downstairs loo, which I think hysterical, but am aware is desperately cheesy. The walls are 'menstrual joy' thanks to an mn thread. Grin

Oh, and I have a seagull hanging from my living room ceiling, just because.

Not a real one, obv.

One wedding photo on a canvas then the rest is what I've done myself (definately no masterpieces or oil paintings, its more fibre art)

floweryblue · 03/05/2012 20:11

I think you shoud put up with what you've got and gradually replace as and when you see things you love and can afford.

floweryblue · 03/05/2012 20:13

If you want prints, go for etchings or handmade prints, don't waste your money on giclee, they are just high quality glorified posters.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 03/05/2012 20:23

Have you seen this website? www.degreeart.com/original-art There is a lot I don't like but just a few I'm tempted by just have to talk dh into and I like the theory of spreading the cost Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 03/05/2012 20:30

We have a bit of a mixture really:

-painting by a friend who is an artist
-a very old painting that used to be in my grandparents house
-a series of multi-media images that we bought in an art gallery in a town we were visiting
-2 prints/etchings from car boot sales
-a framed Indian embroidered wall hanging
-a framed textile/beaded abstract piece that I made
-a few photos of the DC in old frames from a car boot sale

CalamityJones · 03/05/2012 20:33

Some old Egyptian film posters picked up in a boutique in Cairo.
A photo i took of some graffiti in Brooklyn blown up and put onto canvas.
Some original Obey prints - keep debating selling them as I'm not that keen and they are worth £££ but they were a gift to my husband.
One of two copies of a drawing of Kate Moss - she owns the other one.
Other than that, lots of mirrors, clocks etc

hifi · 03/05/2012 20:42

I have 3 really great paintings from respected artists in my area. They were given to the school for auction. I have one I bid 150 for that is worth 800.

myalias · 03/05/2012 20:45

2 Next flower canvas prints
A few Rosina Wachtmeister prints of Venice and Rome
A batik print of a sunflower
A couple of beach scene wall tiles from Lanzarote
A huge collage of pictures of the family
Couple of wedding photos
A black and white trio of pictures from Venice
Framed photos of Lake Garda and Cornwall

xxDebstarxx · 03/05/2012 20:46

Lots of stuff by Cara Gibson www.facebook.com/pages/Art-by-Cara-Gibson/225591280862512?sk=photos a local artist

maybenow · 03/05/2012 20:58

i can't really just go out and buy 'art'.. i tend to mostly buy stuff on holiday.. and take a lot of landscape photographs.
in the living room we've got a tapestry from our honeymoon in peru, a painting of the town where i went to university, a print from a trip i took to maine, and a series of three photographs of landscapes i took around scotland.
in the hallway we've got a picasso print from a trip to barcelona, and a screenprint by a friend who's an artist.
in the kitchen we've got some photos i took in peru of women in traditional dress weaving and in the bathroom some photos of peruvian ruins.
each one makes me smile because it brings back memories.

WisteriaWoman · 03/05/2012 21:49

DH buys lots of art on Ebay - unfortunately we don't share the same taste;(
He likes Victorian prints of birds :((( and I like something more contemporary but since he bought the house I can hardly complain (though I do!)

I'm hoping to get some NICE pictures from an auction later this month.

Willowisp · 03/05/2012 22:23

Lots of interesting stuff here...Cara Gibson is very striking.

I think the local artists is the way to go....just need to find them...

Dh did put up some pictures we still like...the others will go on eBay soon !

Have a look at Art.com. You can get literally anything in any size in any frame and I think it's reasonable. Yes they might be glorified posters but they are good quality and once framed look great.

Aboutlastnight · 04/05/2012 09:03

I have this above our Ercol table. It's kinda tongue in cheek but I like the emerald green and the yellow. We were given it after a neighbour's house clearance by my horrified MIL who thought it incredibly tacky. She's probably right Grin

Flisspaps · 04/05/2012 09:20

A black and white photo of the Liver Buildings and one of a local church taken by me

A black and white print of the Buildings

A poppy painting by Michelle Luter from Candleglass in Shrewsbury (her shop)
