Dry cleaner won't take my dress!

I have a silk dress which is cream with a black print on it. I wore it to a Christmas party and due to my slatternly ways forgot to take it to the cleaners. I need it cleaned for Saturday and the only cleaners near won't take it as the colour may run.

Is there any way I can clean it at home? I am tempted to throw it in the machine on the hand wash cycle and hope for the best but I have nothing else to wear and no cash to get anything else!

I've washed lots of dry clean only wool/cashmere, but never silk. I think if you're going to try it, you need to be prepared to bin it if it all goes wrong.

Sorry, not much help Grin

I've washed silk before, on a cold/hand wash cycle. Dried it on a hanger and steam ironed it. It's been fine.
But I agree with Tempted - you have to be prepared to bin it if it goes wrong. Good luck!

Febreeze? Just kidding.

Does it just need a general wash or is there a mark that needs getting out? If the former I'd hand wash it, but I don't trust our washing machine :)

Ok hand wash it with a silk/wool detergant and keep a colour run remover on standby. You can also have a colour catcher in the water.

Just check everything is silk safe.

If you do put it on the handwash cycle remember to turn off any spin cycle.

Are these any good
www.dr-beckmann.co.uk/products/laundry-products/dry-clean-only/
you just need a tumble dryer

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/04/2012 18:12

I tried that insancerre, didnt work for me.

Don't know if I'd risk this myself, but my mum always used to soak items liable to run in a cold salt solution for a while before washing them. She was a very particular laundress and despaired of my careless approach, so I presume she knew what she was doing.

Have been trying to reply and MN keeps crashing!

Dp is trying a dry cleaner near his office today but if no luck will be searching out the stuff insancerre linked to, and then try the hand wash/colour catcher combo if its no good!

Wish me luck!
