What furniture do your DCs have in their room? Wardrobe & drawers or just wardrobe? HELP!

DS(6) has a big bedroom and a massive old pine wardrobe that is not terribly practical and he climbs in and on it. He needs a new one but I don't know what - drawers/ shelves/ how much hanging space.

I want to give him more storage for toys, easier access to his clothes, places to store shoes etc.

Is it best to have a double wardrobe & a chest of drawers?

Or a triple wardrobe and no drawers?

WHat about bookshelves?

Mine both have a wardrobe, chest of drawers and a bookcase. Dd also has a small 3 drawer bedside cabinet that she keeps her underwear in.

DD has wardrobe, chest of drawers with bookshelf above, bookshelves, ottoman, and a little armchair.

Does a 6yr old DS need any hanging space? We're not planning on putting anything in our DS's room as it can all be folded. DD has some hanging space as she has dresses which are impossible to fold without creasing.

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 22/04/2012 21:34

i don't think you need that much hanging space

we hang ds' school uniform and shirts and jumpers

i would have a single wardrobe with shelves down the other side and a chest of drawers

Catilla · 22/04/2012 21:40

I've never hung any of my DC's clothes. Olny ever ironed a couple of items. What's the point in faffing with hangers. They wouldn't be able to reach, and would never put anything back!

Seona1973 · 22/04/2012 22:01

I hang up all the kids t-shirts, shirts, tops, jumpers, dresses, etc. Easier than rummaging around in a drawer creasing everything up

ggirl · 22/04/2012 22:12

ds only has drawers

hooks on the back of his door for hanging a few things like dressing gown etc

Wardrobe with shelves n drawers combo and some small hanging space at the top for a few dresses. (DDs are small, so dresses aren't that long) They have 2 bookshelves each that 'their' special toys are kept on and the rest of the toys we have in the family room as ther bedrooms are quite small.

Grockle · 23/04/2012 07:51

We hang a lot of DS's clothes - jumpers, shirts, school uniform, coats etc (because there is more hanging space than drawers) so yes, he needs plenty of space. He'll get bigger as will his clothes!

If he had a wardrobe with shelves & hanging space, that would be ideal, I just can't find any I like.

DD has drawers and a book case but she is only 21 months at the moment so no need to hang stuff up. When she's older we're going to get high rise bed with wardrobe, and desk built in so she'll have wardrobe and drawers then.

mogs0 · 23/04/2012 08:23

Ds had a small wardrobe but it's in my room now as it wasn't being used.

In his room he has a captains bed with three drawers at the bottom, a tall cupboard with shelves and a shorter cupboard with shelves. These, in theory, hold all his clothes and toys. He also has a small bookcase for his books.

The ones we have are from ikea and you can buy them to suit your needs...I can't remember the name of the range at the moment but I'll link to it later if you're interested.

HappyAsEyeAm · 23/04/2012 14:12

More shelves and drawers than hanging space, I think.

If you don't want a massive financial investment, I don't think you can go far wrong with the Stuva range from Ikea. Mix and match furniture and storage items and a range of colourways. And it doesn't look like childrens furniture (well, it doesn't if you stiock to just white), so your DS won't grow out of it.

For my DS, I find that I keep his clothes and bedding in a big chest of drawers and underneath that, toys and books on Ikea bookcases, and I only hang up coats and shirts. We do have a playroom though, which means that we can get away with only minimal storage in his bedroom.

If you're thinking of renewing his bed, a captain's bed sounds a brillinat idea. Or a trundle drawer type thing underneath a single bed.

Aspace and GLTC seem to have very nice options too.

Grockle · 23/04/2012 18:33

Thank you. He's not having a new bed since he has a fairly new double bed (long story!) but his room is big so space is not an issue. Thanks for suggestions - will look at aspace and GLTC. I want to get from Ikea since it's cheap but it's a pain with delivery and, as someone said on another thread, their website is shite.

We have used a single wardrobe, with a chest of drawers inside it: the doors to the wardrobe removed. And also an under-bed trundle drawer (get one with castors rather than one with "sliders").

MaureenMLove · 24/04/2012 22:22

I'm considering taking the wardrobe and chest of drawers out of DD's (16) bedroom. She doesn't use them... Grin
