I've been after one of these for a while but I can only find fancy pantsy wood and cast iron ones that cost loads. I'd prefer a cheapo plastic one, I'm not fussed about how it looks because it will always be covered in laundry and I don't spend an awful lot of time looking up.

I just need it to be one of the ones that you can hoist up and down to save space and prevent small children from 'helping'. Has anyone seen one?

TIA :)

Is this one any good?

EauRouge · 18/04/2012 16:46

Yes, that's the kind of thing! Thanks Bunbaker.

smalltown, our wood and metal one fell down recently (cord had worn through from years of use). Glad it didn't hit my head!

Merrylegs · 18/04/2012 17:32

I don't think you'll find a cheapo plastic one because wet clothes are heavy and you really need the wood and metal to hold the weight - plus a really good thick cord for the hoisting (until it wears out!).

You would be amazed how heavy they are when loaded up with wet washing. I can't imagine how plastic would cope. What ever you get, make sure you attach the pulleys into a solid ceiling joist.

Shallishanti · 18/04/2012 17:52

FP is right about the weight, hence the need fo a joist but don't let that put you off as they are fantastic and save £££
(don't put in yr kitchen if you can avoid it though, it's OK most of the time but withsome cooking will absorb smells)

everythingtodo · 18/04/2012 17:52

This house has a plastic one which was here when we moved in. Its ok but not great- poles sag and washing is prone to slipping off.

Previous house had wood and cast iron. Much better imo- washing never slipped off once.

Ikea have just stopped making their one. I think it was called arnold or something, and it was £15. some Ikeas still have some residual stock, but not Wembley and I got their display model after chasing people with ladders and screwdrivers for an hour discounted to £5 (smug)

The cheap cast iron end on the wood and metal one I had snapped right through! Farewell airer, it was nice to know you!
