Upright freezers in unheated garage?

Hi we are finally able to get a freezer for our garage.

DH is convinced that you have to have a chest freezer in an unheated garage but as someone of short stature I'd much rather an upright one with drawers for ease of use. I'd also imagine it would take a smaller amount of floor space.

Does anyone have any experience of upright freezers in unheated garages please?

Thanks in advance

my freezer is in the garage and it is fine. It is a small one, same size as a small fridge. It's been there about 2 years. The only downside is if someone leaves the door open, it's not so easy to spot.

Some freezers and fridges can't operate properly in a cold environment. Check out the manufacturer websites to confirm on particular models.

We have one and it did 'break down' this Winter - something to do with the cold weather Hmm - threw out all the food and was just about to get rid of the freezer when it came back to life. So we still use it but not for 'expensive' stuff - ie: its full of bread/milk/ reduced bargains etc and my husband's fishing bait Grin.

ragwort I presume that was an upright? This is what DH is concerned about. From limited Internet searching they all seem to have a minimum operating temp of ten degrees. I think that would mean most of the year it's below the operating temperature.

But then a fair few chest freezers had a similar bottom limit.

Basically a fridge/freezer needs to be kept in an environment warmer than the temperature it's trying to chill food at. Otherwise the thermostat will freak out and think that it's already reached optimum temp and stop chilling!

mil has had one in hers for over 20 years Grin

You need a Beko - or one that advertises itself as being operational in very low temperatures.

As I understand it, the thermometer that regulates the temp inside the freezer thinks 'oh, it's very cold outside, I don't need to turn on the refrigeration thing' and so the food inside the freezer (which is in effect off) defrosts when it's cold weather.

Gosh, I've never heard of that! My parents have had a freezer (chest, upright or sometimes both) in our garage for about 40 years and my sister has had one for about 10 (they both have fridge freezers in the garage too).

I don't think it's ever occurred to anyone in my family that they may not like the cold :o

I've got an upright freezer in the unheated garage and have never noticed a problem! (family all still alive...)

I think older fridge freezers are better quality more resilient.

Our 7 year old ff died on Christmas Eve overloaded with Christmas food and all of my batch cooking for after DC4 was born. Luckily it was, er, freezing in the garage so we just left the food in the garage.
