How can I stop or get rid of cooking smells?

We don't eat fried food very often but now and then we'll have ham, egg and chips or, like tonight, omlettes. Afterwards the whole house smells of what I've cooked and it's really unpleasant. It happens with other food smells as well but is worse with fried stuff.

What can I do? Our extractor fan doesn't seem to be very efficient and I've tried candles but they don't do much. I hate fresh air sprays but at the moment feel I would resort to one if it meant not waking up tomorrow morning to the smell of stale frying :(

Does your extractor fan need a new filter? There are different types depending if it goes to the outside or just recirculates the air, but either way they need replaced after a while.

Just open the windows for half an hour during/after cooking.

yep, open windows after/during cooking.
also wipe down any grease with all purpose or kitchen cleaner (the grease is what smells).
is your extractor fan connected to the outside? they are quite efficient, the ones that only suck things into a mat above the stove are useless. filters need to be changed often...

DH hit the nail on the head this morning I think - our kitchen is in the middle of the house with no windows to the outside (conservatory one side, living room the other) so I think that's why the smell lingers - it has nowhere to go! Will try opening window and letting it waft out to the conservatory (!) and look at new filters although I think the fan is just a bit crap - I think it's connected to the outside but not entirely sure .

Thanks ladies :)

Any candle will do the job though tbh.
