Storage for hoover/mop etc, how much cupboard space?

Apologies for the very boring question, but we are finally getting a utility room (yippee!) and I am planning cupboards/units etc.

What sort of cupboard size would you suggest for storing a miele type vacuum cleaner and a mop bucket? Mops/brooms can go on the hook/bracket things on the inside of the door. I'd prefer not to have to take the hoover flex off to store it.

I'd like to squeeze in a cleaning caddy and toolbox too if I can, so probably need some shelves.

I'm not naturally organised so cant picture how it will work - hoover and mop live in a corner of the kitchen at the mo, not pretty...

TIA!

Upright or cylinder vac?
Are you having bespoke units made to the size you want or are you buying 'off the shelf'?
If you have the space, a full height cupboard (floor to ceiling) is always useful to store large items - ironing board, vacuum, mops, brushes etc. Place shelves within the cupboard above the height of the tallest item to be stored to maximise the storage.
Open shelves are best for storing things that look attractive and tidy anyway as they will be on show all the time.
Cupboards are best to hide all the 'stuff' that you need to store.
Cleaning caddy/toolbox etc can go in under sink or low level units.

We have a cylinder Miele vacuum and hopefully the units will be made for us, have found someone very reasonable to make them but he is clueless about design and sizes needed.
Its a small odd shaped room so once washer/drier and hoover cupboard are in, plus sink, there isnt much room left over.

Should a 50cm wide unit be wide enough for hoover and mop bucket etc?

It's difficult to be specific without seeing a plan of the room.

I would start by planning the layout of the sink and washer and dryer as you may be limited by the location of the water and waste pipes. If floor space is very limited you can get 'stacker' washer & dryers (where the dryer sits on top of the washer on a special connector shelf) but obviously you then lose worktop height space above the appliances and wall storage above where you could put shelves or units.
Once you have these sited then you can start to fill in the spaces around these with built in storage. Its great that you are having the storage built as you will be able to maximise the storage available in all the odd spaces. Remember that if you are having bespoke units you can have them any width and depth so you might be able to squeeze in a small or shallow cupboard where you wouldn't be able to put standard units/appliances.

To get an idea of storage size needed, put your bucket and vacuum and any other bits you might want to store with them together on a piece of newspaper in the corner of a room and draw around their footprint (including cables & bits that stick out). You should then be able to measure how much internal space you need in the cupboard then add the width of the frame each side to get the cupboard size.

Hope this helps.

Thanks v much mumdebump.

We will have to stack the washer/drier as there is limited floor space and I want to fit a sink in there, but I shoudl have room for a tall brrom cupboard.

Good idea to draw round them forf a template. What worries me is all the vacuum flex which is a pita to store.

Do you have a lovely organised utility room with room for everything?

Only in my dreams Grin
In reality I have a dumping ground for unsorted clutter pretending to be a utility room. Unfortunately it is way down the list of priorities for spending in our money pit house :(

How about large storage hooks in back of cupboard to loop the gathered up vacuum flex over?

calendula · 15/04/2012 12:33

Have the shelves in your cupboard made 10-12cm shorter than normal and hang www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?query=Vacuum+hose+holder inside the door. Then you can hang your hoover flex inside the door ans still close it. You can also have a groove the size of a mop handle cut into all the shelves so that you can have your mop standing inside without losing shelf storage space.

That looks good calendula, thanks for the link.
We have a money pit as well mumdebump, you have my sympathies...
