How can I update old antique furniture

I have a dressing table and dinning table that I have just bought. They look a little grim and wonder how I can bring life to them without painting. I was thinking of a deep clean perhaps with vinegar to get rid of some smell in the dressing table cabinets.

My question is after cleaning how can I bring a little bit of life to these lovely furniture pieces? There are a few scratch marks on the table too and wonder if waxing will be any good? I wanted to avoid heavy waxing but I can't think of any other way of bringing a bit of life without some waxing. Are there any good products that I can use for this? I went to B&Q to see what they had for waxing and none looked right so I left empty handed. Can't think where else I can get these on the high street apart from online but I really want to do this asap. Many thanks.

I have lots of old furniture. This is what I do when I first get them.

  1. Wash with this and a lint free cloth (I use a microfibre)

  2. Polish with this and a muslin cloth, giving it a good rub.

If cracks need filling you can buy wax crayon type things that you rub over and polish off.
