New carpet desperately needed! Please help!

We have lived in our house for 5.5 yrs and everywhere is beginning to look very tired and scruffy (imo!). We have made improvements by decorating all rooms and installing new bathroom and kitchen, but it feels like it's time to redecorate again (and I just don't have time!)

The main problem is the living room, stairs and landing carpet. It is currently a dirty cream colour and parts of it are thread-bare Hmm. Does anyone know of any carpet sales or carpets they can recommend?

Remember having similar problem when vendors took away these carpets "by mistake", and huge cost of replacement. Easier to find smaller pieces in sales, if they don't all have to match, eg separate carpet or laminate in lounge or hall, paint and runner on stairs.
Best carpet sellers come recommended from family & friends, as can be huge differences in cost, but suggest avoiding "dirty cream colour" in hall,and/or extra washable rug at entrance for practicality.

Polypropylene carpet is very dirt resistant and will stand up to violent cleaning so is very suitable for a hall. I was advised to get a "Heather Twist" which means it is slightly mottled to avoid marks showing, and the fibres are crimped to help them stand up well. It feels OK, but not as luxuriously soft as the 80/20 Wilton we chose for the bedrooms. See if they will make you a large mat or two from the same carpet, to put in front of the door. If you have two you can swap them over periodically to equalise wear. It may be possible to use off-cuts from your main piece, but the fitters should know someone who can bind the edges to prevent fraying. Anyway an extra metre of the roll will not cost much.

Look for end-of-rolls being discounted.

I found a local independent gave me better deals than the big retail sheds.

Don't skimp on underlay or fitting.

You may need a carpenter to plane and refit your doors if the new carpet is a lot thicker than the old.

I was in a flooring shop lately -looking at wood floors but an amazing range of carpets caught my eye -Mohawk-amazing -guaranteed stain free-different grades of softness. I'm not in the market for a carpet but if i was (sigh)....Wow.
