can anyone advise - my gym clothes still smell musty after being washed. I use bio gel and conditioner, I have read that white vinegar is good so have got some of that (not tried it yet) - any other tips

TIA :)

Napisan gets regularly recommended on here for super-sweaty clothes. I have not tried it myself though.

SardineQueen · 05/04/2012 18:50

What temp are you washing at. Low temps not always enough for sweat and other pongs.

DuffyMoon · 05/04/2012 18:53

yes have used napisan before but tend to use it for whites...have to wash at 40 degrees - bra etc synthetic so darent risk any higher

Try using a squirt of neat "fairy" washing up liquid (has to be fairy!) and gently rub in on affected part before putting in wash machine or alternatively can leave on few hours/overnight.Don't worry,it doesn't stain!

SardineQueen · 05/04/2012 18:58

That's the prob I find that with the modern (!) fabrics you have to wash them at cooler temps but that's not really good enough for clothing being sweated into heavily.

Maybe try a detergent with febreze in it?

RatDesPaquerettes · 05/04/2012 18:58

mmmm... not sure what to advise as I am not a big 'sweater'.

I occasionally use white vinegar instead of conditioner though and it is good. Not sure if that would solve your problem though.

Do you leave your clothes in your gym bag before washing them or do you wash them after your gym session?

MousyMouse · 05/04/2012 19:04
  • ditch the conditioner, makes the smell worse and buggers the elastics.
  • wash at 40 with bio powder.
  • put white vinegar into the conditioner compartment (don't worry, the smell goes away as the clothes dry)
  • you could put in dettol disinfecting liquid (instructions on back of bottle)

Halo Sports Wash laundry liquid is very good. Bought some after recommendation on here and seems to have worked on DH's sweaty sports kit.

carrotsandcelery · 05/04/2012 20:32

I second the Halo - works a treat on dh's running gear and my stuff from the stables.

The white vinegar does the same though. I often put it in the conditioner section.

Don't use conditioner as it "holds" the bacteria in I think.

DuffyMoon · 05/04/2012 21:57

oooo - not heard of halo before and its not hideously expensive ! will give it a whirl, many thanks

Napisan will work on a lower temp
If they are really bad then stick them in a bucket of napisan and warm water
Wash without fabric conditioner as that holds the sweat smell in. Sometimes if I have soaked them then I chuck a bit of napisan in the wash too

DuffyMoon · 06/04/2012 12:59

right here goes - halo and vinegar in the washing machine !

Further to a recommendation on here, I bought Biotex for stinky gym gear. It really works.

eggyblackett · 06/04/2012 13:07

Halo is the business :)

lisaro · 06/04/2012 13:54

I have sons [busmile] - Ariel with Febreeze, and a long wash cycle at 30.

CarpeJugulum · 08/04/2012 12:22

Napisan works at 30.

Vanish sensitive powder also works well on DH's smelly pits

CeliaFate · 09/04/2012 11:05

The only thing I've found that works is to wash them twice. Do a short wash to get the worst out then a longer wash to deep clean.
