Has anyone had woodworm treatment done in their attic?

We are in the process of looking for a new house and have seen one we like so had a look at the survey on it. The only thing flagged up that we weren't aware of is that there is evidence of woodworm in the attic timbers. I've had a look at a couple of exterminator's websites and they are a bit vague about the costs involved, has anyone had their attic treated for woodworm and was it reasonably cheap?

You can do it yourself. You can get a paint or a spray that you just coat the infested wood with. If the wood is badly damaged it will need replacing. Be sure to treat neighbouring timbers too and bear in mind that it may crop up all over the house (as it has in ours) as when the blighters hatch they have to go somewhere... Just google various preparations and you can find out the various toxicity in relation to humans - we have used a less toxic one because of having children in the house.

We did our own - or at least DH did. We got the stuff that you just paint on from a tin from B&Q. DH spent a while taking care to paint every bit of wood in the loft and that was it.

Done. No problems since, and we've been here over 10 years now.

Thanks, that's good to know that you can treat it yourself.

We got a man to do it and got the sellers to pay half, was about a grand - the attic had several compartments so took him a while. Was a one man business so I think the bigger firms would be more expensive. He said he'd be surprised if an old house didn't have evidence of woodworm.

We've now got a guarantee that he'll treat any more woodworm for free and a lovely certificate, which will be useful when we come to sell.

Oh forgot to say our solicitor had worked with this guy before so its worth trying to get some recommendations.

Piggy backing on this as we've just had the termite man in here in our Australian house. Termites are buggers and can munch through a metre of wood in months.

We've got the all-clear but will need to be re-proofed at a cost of $4-5000 for a 10-year guarantee, but having seen what the little buggers have done to our neighbours' house makes this seem small potatoes.

You're not allowed to DIY this in Australia because of the chemicals involved.:(

Back to the OP - definitely get it done, and preferably with a certificate as it'll make re-sale easier.
