we're in temporary housing in US while waiting to move into our proper home and it being America there is a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Back home I only trekked to laundrette when i was really behind on the washing it was too cold to have it hanging round the flat for days - at the moment I'm using it for every wash because we're in an apartment with no indoor line or rack (ours is coming over on the boat so I don't want to buy another! cheapskate)...but our clothes are fading so fast, have I got it on too high a heat or is this just what happens when you tumble dry??

I second no fading here ... and I have a penchant for bright kiddy clothing and always use tumble dryer.

I found that if I used the high heat, yes. Also shrunk stuff and wore if out faster.

I don't believe the drier is causing the fading. More likely the machine is hotter than we're used to, or, as Americans use more bleach in their laundy than we do, see if there is a powder for Colours available.

Didn't occur to me it could be the detergent, will try changing it but already using the gentlest one I could find, maybe a specific one for color would be good though. You have to change the fluff drawer every cycle which makes me think it must be the dryer?

tumblers do seem to shrink some cotton items (especially T-shirts) and wear away the fibres, seems to happen more with loose/soft fabrics.
