Please help me organise my new house

Im a chronically disorganised person but so want to change. I've read all the recent organisational threads and live in awe of people like LeQueen. We are about to move to our forever home and I really want to start as I mean to go on.
So is anyone prepared to help me come up with a plan?

My advice prior to your move is declutter don't take anything you don't need, use or love from your old house to your new house only for it to clutter it up.

Bonsoir · 28/03/2012 08:02

I agree with Petrean - don't move clutter to your new home.

Have you planned storage at your new home? You really need to think through all the cupboards you require: hall cupboard for coats, shoes and outdoor toys, kitchen cupboards, including a tall "housemaid's" cupboard for all cleaning stuffs, vacuum cleaner, ironing board, long-handled brooms and brushes, buckets etc. Office cupboards for your domestic filing. A large wardrobe per person with shelves and hanging space. A dedicated cupboard for bathroom/toiletries storage.

I could go on, but you get the jist. Get everyone in your family to brainstorm on the storage/furniture they need individually and you need communally. Ask your more organised friends about the storage they have and go and view it!

Am trying to declutter like mad. Will sit down and plan storage. I know it is key to have a place for everything, I think that is where I fall down.

Have a look at Lakeland for storage ideas.

Be tough and chuck out the junk, the tatty towels, the samples of 'stuff' anything broken, the Mis matched crockery.
Look at the ergonomics of your kitchen.

Tidy everyday as you go along

Definitely need to have a crockery clear out. Anyone any tips on best way to organise a kitchen?

Am watching with interest! We're about to move too. What about books? How do you decide what to keep? If left unfettered I'd end up with walls/piles/tunnels of books and find it agonising to get rid of them!

And stuff that I kind of like but that fail on functionality? I have 2 china bookends but they're not heavy enough to actually hold back books. What to do with things like that? Does anyone ever regret decluttering?

Bonsoir · 30/03/2012 09:19

You have to get over the psychological hump of parting with books. I don't keep books I don't use.

DaisySteiner · 30/03/2012 09:33

I actually regret getting rid of so many books. We have done massive amounts of decluttering over the past few months then redecorated and got some good storage sorted, including making-over the study so we've got lovely bookshelves. Unfortunately though I went too far and now after years of battling with over-stacked shelves, I've got an entire bookshelf which has nothing to go on it Shock I think there are probably some more books in the loft, but not enough to make it look full Sad

Petrean · 30/03/2012 17:38

With books if there's absolutely no chance I'll ever read it again it goes to the charity shop. I have 3 bookcases and when they're full I declutter ready to fill up again.. Or not because I'm much more kindle nowadays.

Look at the Ikea website, great ideas for storage even if you don't buy from them. X

Re kitchen get some plate stackers that sit in the corner of your cupboards and utilise space better

Organisation depends on the layout of your kitchen. I have lots drawers. I have a cupboard for plastic stuff , one for glasses, one for baking ingredients. One for white everyday crockery one for coloured. I have a drawer for the kids curry and a separate one for ours. Have a cupboard for vases and a cupboard for gadgets. I dont have loads of dried, store cupboard food and tins maybe a double/triple. Etc etc II store my casserole, slow cooker pots on top of the units as its looks good as a collection. I do. Have a utility room where I keep my cleaning stuff but I don't buy loads of different types. I keep
Everyday items under sink hardly any though washing up liquid, and tablets, glass cleaner, kitchen roll multi purpose cleaner and the shoe cleaners.
I clean and tidy my cupboards about once a quarter

Loads of good tips here. So a cupboard in the kitchen for each type of thing then. Anyone got a link to good plate stackers?

Lots of stuff on my blog about nesting and organising, but this is a good list for the kitchen.

Here

Try John Lewis, lakeland or I'd be surprised if Ikea do t have some.

Drawer dividers are sooo handy too
