Always thought they were a bit naff, but saw some some in posh shop recently. Made by Yankie Candle. Now, I love their candles, but can I risk the plug- in. Anyone?

being near one for half an hour makes me breathless, wheezey, tight chested and cough - fuck knows what is in them

littledolly · 24/03/2012 18:07

I started using plug ins a while ago and loved them, but then heard a few horror stories about them going on fire and burning houses down so stopped using them Sad

PimpMyTunnel · 25/03/2012 12:22

They're not dangerous. They're made to be on 24-7 and won't blow up your house. I LOVE Yankee candles and am also buying an electric plug in soon- going to get a Yankee candle 'fluffy towels' one. The best fragrance ever.

OrenishI · 25/03/2012 22:20

Pharmgirl - you are right; they are naff.

amazonianwoman · 26/03/2012 19:39

A friend had a free house safety check by the fire service and was told to avoid them at all costs as they do start house fires. I'd take a fireman's word for it!

carrotsandcelery · 26/03/2012 21:15

I would be concerned about the chemicals in them as well. I used to have one in my classroom (teenagers) and it made some dcs itchy eyed and uncomfortable. They weren't Yankee ones but it still put me right off.

MmeLindor. · 26/03/2012 21:16

I hate them.

My mum has one in the hall and makes me every time I go past it.

Meglet · 26/03/2012 21:17

Vom.

I always think a house is dirty if it uses air fresheners. Don't like the idea of chemicals either.

hedwig2001 · 26/03/2012 22:08

Our fire officer says they have been implicated in several house fires.

PigletJohn · 26/03/2012 22:39

I quite like the battery-powered Airwick ones. They basically contain an aerosol of lavender or white linen or whatever, and automatically squirt it out according to a timer you can set.

The supermarts do own-brand refill aersols to fit.

No heat and no mains power supply suggests they are unlikely to be able to cause a fire.

I think I saw in "Which" that the mains plug-ins sometimes overheat, melt, or burn.

IAmBooyhoo · 26/03/2012 22:56

i visited a friend last week and within a minute of sitting down in her living room i was choking on the chemicals coming from her plug-in air fresheners. she must have had it turned up too high, it was vile. not even a nice smell.

my mum has one of these sitting on the windowsill of her bathroom which is right beside the loo. it is movement activated which means everytime i sit down to pee i get squirted right in the face with a load of stinking chemicals. i always forget to move it before i sit down. Grin

OP- get reed sticks. The yankee candle brand reed sticks are faaaaab! no batteries, no electricity.

pharmgirl · 27/03/2012 17:45

OK, will look out for the sticks. Thanks for the fire warnings, i hadn't considered that aspect!

I hate plug ins too but tried the Yankee candle ones as I like the reeds and candle tarts. Their plug ins don't smell the same as their other products; grosserama.

chipsandpeas · 28/03/2012 09:10

i have the yanke candle one, have the clean cotton and baby powder scent and they are great, not as in your face as others i tried in the past, like febreeze

i only have mine in the front hall so its not as strong in the main parts of the house

fussbucket · 28/03/2012 09:27

I can't go to the loo in Tesco, Pizza Express and the local leisure centre because of those things.

I've got a reed diffuser,it said it would last six weeks when I bought it before Christmas but it's still going!

Saltire · 28/03/2012 09:30

I hav eput a plug in air freshner in the DSes room as DS1 has a very smelly bottom to get rid of teenage boy smell, however I ahve the battery operated movement activated one in the living room,a dn use those avon room fragrance sprays elsewhere like bathroom, having a house of 3 males
