I bought a duvet cover from ebay and it STINKS of cigarettes

I have never experienced anything like it. I would not usually buy used bedding but money is tight and it was good quality and described as barely used. It was meant for DCs bed which really worries me. Is it possible to get rid of the stench and even if I do, would it be safe for a child to sleep in afterwards? I usually buy green products exclusively and I am guessing that this is going to need a lot of non-green intervention and some more.

Was it listed as from a non smoking home. If so you could ask for a refund. If not, then I'm afraid you just have to wash it and get on with it. MAybe leave feedback to the effect it was smoky.

Once washed it'll be fine.. I doubt that nasty chemicals etc will survive a 60 degree wash tbh (even if using Ecover or the like) and afaik with smoking, it's breeathing fumes back onto your LOs that may cause issues, not them sleeping under a washed, once smoky, duvet cover.

Catsdontcare · 23/03/2012 14:17

I think if washed a 60 degrees and dried outside in the fresh air it will be fine. Cigarette smoke clings to everything my dad doesn't smoke inside his house but whenever we stay all our clothes smell!

Catsdontcare · 23/03/2012 14:18

Oh I would also email seller and let them know

some plastic bags have a horrid smokey smell.

could it have been stored in something like that.

But that aside agree a good wash and air and it will be fine.

razumov · 23/03/2012 14:42

Well, it stank from the moment the postman handed it to me. Royal Mail had put it in a clear bag with a security catch thingy presumably to contain the odour! No mention of smoking in ad although, as I said, I would never describe something like it as " nearly new" regardless of the condition. Do you really think a 60 degree wash and line dry would do it? Would it really get rid of all the nasties - just thinking of the DC sleeping with their face against it all night

60 degree wash and line dry will be fine. (also an eco-freak...) Smile

Catsdontcare · 23/03/2012 15:10

Yes it will be fine. It's retained the odour rather than the chemicals themselves.

ceres · 23/03/2012 16:15

no nasty chemicals required.

soak in water with a good cup or two of white vinegar added. stick in washing machine (on 60) with normal bio and use white vinegar instead of fabric conditioner. dry as usual, smell will be gone.

razumov · 23/03/2012 16:58

thank you
Ceres - would ecover non bio do?

I once bought a brand new grobag from ebay and it stank of cigs, even the packaging. I was worried about using it but once washed and hung on the washing line it was fine. I have never bought anything from ebay since it just totally put me off.

CeliaFate · 23/03/2012 17:27

Wash it in biological powder at 60, then wash again using non-bio. Line dry it and it'll be fine.

CeliaFate · 23/03/2012 17:27

I'd use bio first as that contains more chemicals that kill germs and get rid of stains/odours.

I bought a pram off of someone which stank of smoke, and it had turned slightly yellow (should be white). We washed it and cleaned it all up, aired it outside and it was fine. I also had some reusable nappies off of someone and they had been stored in their mum's flat and stank of smoke. Washed them on anti bac wash and they were fine.

Cigarette smoke gets everywhere. I can tell which children in my class live with smokers, as their homework books and reading logs stink when I'm marking them at home.
