Moths - how to prevent them?

We don't have any, thankfully, but I have suddenly become aware of moths being something I really don't want in the first place!

How do I keep them away please? Including in a newborn baby's nursery? And in rooms that we don't use very often where clothes and blankets etc are kept.

I think we may have them. I have no idea of what to do, so hoping someone wise will come along with good advice soon.

lots of vacuuming, especially around the edges of carpets by the skirting board, and under/behind furniture

put some moth-killer hangers containing Transfluthrin inside your wardrobes and drawers. It emits a vapour that kills grubs and eggs as well as adult moths, but is broken down by sunlight and dissipates in fresh air, so must be inside a closed container. I get ZeroIn or Zentect from Robert Dyas. Each hanger protects a space of half a cubic metre. They last about 6 months and cost about £4 for a pack of four. Rentokil hangers contain the same chemical at a higher price. Lavender and cedar do not kill moths.

if you are putting seasonal or outgrown clothes or bedding away, seal inside a plastic crate with lid, or a large transparant plastic bag taped shut, with a mothkiller inside.

Don't hang up clothes that have been worn, moths are attracted to the smell.

You can put a few pheronome traps about and keep an eye on them to see if there are moths in the house.

If you ever actually get an infestation, it will be a lot more work to clear it, and you will have to spray as well. Tumble-drying will kill them, but you must immediately put garments in crates or bags to prevent new eggs being laid.
